Google Analytics 4 for SEO: The Reports That Actually Matter
GA4 doesn't replace Google Search Console, but it answers different questions — what users do after they land, which organic landing pages convert, and where SEO traffic is dropping. This guide covers the GA4 reports and techniques most useful for SEO analysis.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console (GSC) answer different questions. GSC tells you what happens on the search results page — impressions, clicks, average position, query-level performance. GA4 tells you what happens after the click — engagement, conversions, revenue, and behaviour on site. For SEO analysis, you need both.
The mistake most SEO practitioners make with GA4 is either ignoring it entirely (GSC is the SEO tool) or treating it as a ranking tool (it isn't). GA4's value for SEO is in the post-click data: which organic landing pages have poor engagement rates, which pages drive conversions vs which drive bounces, where organic traffic is dropping in funnels, and how SEO traffic compares to other channels in actual business outcomes.
Setting up GA4 for SEO analysis
Before pulling reports, two configurations matter:
Link GA4 to Google Search Console. In GA4 Admin → Property → Product Links → Search Console links. This enables the Google organic search traffic reports under Reports → Acquisition → Google organic search traffic. Without this link, organic data in GA4 is limited to channel grouping (organic search sessions) without query-level detail.
Set up your conversions. GA4 tracks everything as events but only counts conversions on events you mark as such. For SEO analysis, the relevant conversions depend on the business model: form submissions, free trial sign-ups, purchases, email subscriptions, demo requests. Without conversions configured, you can only analyse traffic volume and engagement — not the SEO outcomes that matter to the business.
Reports that matter for SEO
Landing page report with organic channel filter
Reports → Engagement → Landing page. Filter by Session default channel group = Organic Search.
This is the most actionable SEO report in GA4. It shows which pages users land on first from organic search, sorted by sessions. Add secondary dimensions to see engagement rate and key events (conversions) per landing page.
What to look for:
- High sessions, low engagement rate — pages getting organic traffic but losing users quickly. Engagement rate in GA4 is the inverse of bounce rate (an engaged session has >10 seconds duration, 2+ page views, or a conversion). A landing page with 5,000 sessions and 20% engagement rate is a priority for content improvement.
- High sessions, zero conversions — pages driving traffic that never converts. May indicate intent mismatch (the query driving the traffic is informational but the page is designed for commercial intent, or vice versa) or a broken conversion path.
- Low sessions but high engagement rate and conversions — high-quality pages not getting enough traffic. These are priorities for link building and internal link concentration.
Google organic search traffic report (GSC-linked)
Reports → Acquisition → Google organic search traffic.
Available only if GA4 is linked to GSC. Shows queries, clicks, impressions, average position from GSC alongside GA4 metrics (sessions, engaged sessions, conversions). This is the only place in GA4 where you can see query-level data alongside on-site behaviour.
Useful for identifying:
- Queries with high impressions and high position (already ranking) that have low CTR — title and meta description optimisation candidates.
- Queries driving traffic but generating zero conversions — potentially off-intent, or the landing page doesn't address what the query implies.
Pages and screens report filtered to organic
Reports → Engagement → Pages and screens. Filter by Session default channel group = Organic Search.
Different from the landing page report: this shows all page views by organic users during their session, not just the first page they landed on. Useful for understanding the full navigation path of organic users — which pages they explore after arriving, where they drop off.
Exploration: content decay analysis
Standard reports won't easily surface content decay. Use Explore → Free form exploration.
Set up:
- Dimension: Landing page + query string
- Metric: Sessions, engaged sessions, engagement rate
- Date range comparison: Current 30 days vs previous 30 days (or year-over-year)
Sort by sessions decline (descending) to find organic landing pages losing the most traffic month-over-month or year-over-year. These are candidates for content refreshes. GA4's date range comparison in explorations is more flexible than GSC's for this analysis.
Organic conversion rate by landing page
In Explore, create a free form with:
- Dimension: Landing page (first user landing page)
- Segment: Organic traffic segment
- Metric: Sessions, key events (conversions), session key event rate
This shows which organic landing pages are most valuable in terms of business outcomes — not just traffic volume. High-traffic organic pages with low conversion rates are prime candidates for CRO (conversion rate optimisation) work that also benefits SEO by improving engagement signals.
Connecting GA4 data to SEO decisions
Finding intent mismatches. When an organic landing page has high traffic but low engagement and no conversions, the likely cause is intent mismatch: the query brings users with one intent, the page addresses a different intent. Cross-reference with GSC to see which queries drive the most traffic to that page. If users searching "how to X" land on a product page, the mismatch is the problem.
Identifying conversion path friction. Use GA4 Explore → Path exploration, starting from organic landing pages. Trace the most common paths from organic landing to conversion vs. paths from organic landing to exit. Significant drop-off points in the funnel (e.g., from a blog article to the pricing page to exit) indicate friction in the SEO-to-conversion path.
Comparing SEO to other channels. Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Compare organic search to direct, referral, paid search, email. This isn't about whether SEO is "better" than other channels — it's about understanding the full picture. If organic has the highest volume but lowest conversion rate across all channels, the content strategy may be attracting top-of-funnel users who need nurturing sequences that aren't in place.
Validating content investments. When you refresh or publish new content, track the specific page's organic traffic and engagement rate over 30/60/90 days in GA4. A content refresh that moves engagement rate from 25% to 45% is a measurable signal that the page better satisfies the intent of organic users — even before you see ranking movement in GSC.
What GA4 cannot tell you about SEO
GA4 does not show:
- Ranking position data — that's GSC only.
- Impression data — how many times pages appeared in search results without a click.
- Query-level impression data for most queries — even the GSC-linked organic report is limited to queries driving sessions, not all impressions.
- Keyword-level attribution for individual sessions — since Google removed query data from referral strings in 2011, most organic sessions appear as (organic) with no keyword. The GSC-linked report provides aggregate query data, not per-session attribution.
For ranking and query analysis, GSC is the primary tool. GA4 is the post-click layer — and for understanding whether SEO traffic actually achieves business objectives, it's indispensable.
Frequently asked questions
Is GA4 useful for SEO if I already use Google Search Console?
Yes, but for different questions. GSC answers: what queries drive impressions and clicks, what positions you rank at, which pages are indexed or have crawl errors, what your Core Web Vitals status is. GA4 answers: what organic users do after they land, which landing pages drive engagement and conversions, where traffic is dropping, how SEO compares to other channels in business outcomes. The GSC-GA4 link enables the organic search traffic report in GA4 that merges both data sources. For comprehensive SEO analysis, you need both tools.
How do I find organic traffic in GA4 without linking GSC?
Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, then filter by Session default channel group = Organic Search. This shows organic sessions, engaged sessions, and conversions from organic without needing GSC linked. The Landing page report with the same filter shows which pages organic traffic arrives at. You lose query-level data without the GSC link, but organic channel performance and landing page behaviour are available in standard GA4.
What replaced the "bounce rate" metric in GA4?
GA4 uses engagement rate instead of bounce rate. Engagement rate = percentage of sessions that were engaged (duration >10 seconds, 2+ page views, or at least one conversion event). An engaged session is the inverse of what would have been a bounce. GA4 still has a bounce rate metric (100% minus engagement rate), but engagement rate is the primary metric in standard reports. For SEO landing page analysis, engagement rate between 40–60% is typical for content pages; below 30% usually indicates intent mismatch or page quality issues.
Can GA4 tell me which keywords drive conversions?
Partially. The Google organic search traffic report (available after linking GA4 to GSC) shows queries alongside conversion events — but the data is aggregate: you see that the query "seo audit tool" drove X sessions and Y conversions across those sessions, not individual-level keyword-to-conversion attribution. For the vast majority of organic sessions, Google doesn't pass the keyword in the referring URL (it appears as (organic) with no keyword). The GSC-linked report is the closest GA4 gets to keyword-level conversion data, and it's limited to queries already driving clicks.
