Handyman SEO: How to Rank Your Handyman Business

SEO guide for handyman businesses — service page architecture (flat-pack assembly, picture hanging, odd jobs, property maintenance), Part P electrical limits, TrustMark, GBP optimisation, and LocalBusiness schema for local pack rankings.

Handyman is one of the broadest trade categories in local search — and that breadth is both a problem and an opportunity. Rank for "handyman near me" and you win general intent; build targeted service pages and you win the high-converting, specific searches that competitors ignore. This guide covers the service page architecture, regulatory limits, credentials, and technical SEO that together move a handyman business into the local pack.

Service Page Architecture

A single page titled "Handyman Services" cannot rank for the full range of jobs a handyman does. Google needs specificity. Build individual pages for each of the following task types — or at minimum, strong H2-anchored sections on a well-structured services page.

Flat-Pack Furniture Assembly

Flat-pack assembly is one of the highest-volume handyman queries and the one most likely to convert quickly — customers have a box sitting in their hallway and want someone today. Build brand-specific pages: IKEA assembly, Argos assembly, Wayfair assembly. Customers search for the brand they bought from, not generic "furniture assembly". Include the product lines you assemble most (IKEA PAX wardrobes, IKEA KALLAX, Argos children's beds) for long-tail coverage.

Picture Hanging and TV Mounting

Picture hanging queries are high-volume but low-complexity. TV mounting queries are fewer but higher-value. Separate the two. For TV mounting, explain wall types because this is the first question customers have:

  • Plasterboard/drywall: requires cavity wall anchors or stud finding; Snap Toggle fixings for heavy screens
  • Brick or masonry: Rawlplug masonry anchors drilled to depth; heavier screens need chemical anchors rated to load
  • Stud walls (timber frame): screw directly into studs; locate with stud finder; rated for full bracket load

Detail the fixing types you use. Customers researching TV mounting read about fixings — a page that explains Rawlplugs vs Snap Toggles vs chemical anchors signals expertise and converts better than a page that just says "we hang TVs".

Curtain Rail and Blind Fitting

Curtain poles, tracks, Roman blinds, Venetian blinds, wooden blinds. Separate pole fitting from blind fitting — they use different fixings and different ladders. Include bay window curtain poles (the bend-to-fit poles many DIYers struggle with) as a specific callout.

Door Hanging and Adjustment

Door hanging (new doors), door adjustment (sticking or dropping doors), and lock replacement are three distinct jobs. Sticking doors are seasonal (they swell in summer) — a seasonal GBP post targeting summer door-swelling questions is an easy win.

Lock replacement: note that replacing a standard mortice lock, Yale-type cylinder, or multipoint lock on a residential door does not require a locksmith licence in England and Wales. A competent handyman can replace like-for-like locks. A separate page clarifying this removes a common objection.

Small Tiling, Grouting, and Siliconing

Limit scope clearly. "Small tiling jobs" means splashbacks, border tiles, single-wall repairs — not full bathroom retiles. Grouting (regrouting worn grout lines) and siliconing (shower seals, bath sealant, kitchen splashback silicone) are quick jobs many customers need. A page on shower resealing or bath silicone replacement captures specific searches.

General Maintenance and Odd Jobs

Touching up paintwork, mending shelves, adjusting hinges, fixing squeaky floorboards, hanging mirrors, assembling garden furniture — the genuine "odd jobs" category. A page listing odd jobs with a clear minimum call-out charge (see below) converts searchers who have three small jobs they want done in one visit.

Property Maintenance Contracts (B2B)

Commercial handyman work for offices, letting agents, and property management companies is a separate business line that deserves a separate B2B page. This page should speak to:

  • Scheduled maintenance visits (monthly, quarterly)
  • Reactive callout SLA (response time commitment)
  • Landlord compliance work (smoke and CO alarm fitting, door viewer fitting)
  • Invoice and purchase order process for commercial clients

Property managers and letting agents search differently from homeowners. A dedicated B2B page with appropriate language converts them; a consumer-facing "odd jobs" page does not.

Part P Electrical Limits

This is the most important compliance topic for handyman SEO — and explaining it on your website builds trust.

Under Part P Building Regulations, certain electrical work in England and Wales is notifiable and must be carried out or certified by a Part P-registered electrician. Handymen without Part P certification cannot legally carry out:

  • Consumer unit (fuse board) replacement
  • New circuits anywhere in a property
  • Any electrical work in bathrooms (Zones 0, 1, and 2)
  • Outdoor electrical installations (garden sockets, EV chargers, outdoor lighting)
  • Work in kitchens near fixed appliances (in some cases)

A handyman can replace like-for-like accessories — sockets, switches, light fittings — in rooms other than bathrooms, provided the power is properly isolated and the existing circuit is unmodified.

What to do on your website: a clear, honest page or section explaining Part P limits does two things. It filters out jobs you cannot legally take on (saving time and avoiding liability), and it demonstrates the kind of transparency that earns trust and reviews. Mention that you work with a local Part P-registered electrician for notifiable work — and include that electrician's name if you have a formal referral arrangement (they may reciprocate with handyman referrals).

Hourly Rate and Minimum Charge

Handyman rates in the UK typically run £35–60 per hour depending on location, with London and the South East at the higher end. Publishing your rate range on your website does something that many trades resist but that converts better: it removes the "how much will it cost?" uncertainty that makes customers hesitate to call.

More importantly, publish your minimum call-out charge. Most handymen charge for a minimum of one or two hours regardless of how short the job is. A customer who calls expecting a £20 job and receives a £50 minimum-charge invoice leaves a negative review. A customer who read "minimum 1.5-hour call-out charge" on your website before calling expects it.

Content on minimum charge and hourly rate on the website reduces time-wasters, sets expectations, and improves the quality of enquiries.

Credentials and Trust Signals

Unlike gas engineers (Gas Safe) or electricians (NICEIC, NAPIT), handymen have no mandatory licensing in England and Wales. This makes voluntary credentials more important, not less — they differentiate you from unlicensed operators.

TrustMark: the Government Endorsed Quality scheme applies to any trade, including handyman work. TrustMark membership signals that your business has been vetted, that you carry adequate insurance, and that you operate to a code of conduct. The government endorsement is a stronger trust signal than most customers realise — display the logo prominently and use the TrustMark badge in LocalBusiness schema.

Which? Trusted Trader: independently audited and consumer-recognised. The Which? name carries weight with older demographics who make up a significant proportion of handyman customers.

DBS Check: not mandatory for handymen, but a Disclosure and Barring Service check is a strong trust signal for customers who are elderly, vulnerable, or who will leave you working alone in their home. Mention it on your website — "all operatives DBS checked" — and include it as a credential in your LocalBusiness schema.

Public liability insurance: minimum £1 million, mention the level. Customers increasingly ask.

Google Business Profile Optimisation

GBP is where handyman local pack rankings are decided. Optimise every available field.

Services list: add every specific task type — flat-pack assembly, TV mounting, picture hanging, door hanging, lock replacement, grouting, siliconing, curtain fitting, and so on. GBP services are directly used in local pack matching. Generic "handyman services" is not enough.

Seasonal GBP posts:

  • Winter: draught-proofing (letterbox seals, door brush strips), bleeding radiators (yes, a handyman can do this), fitting draft excluders, checking loft hatch seals
  • Spring: sash window adjustment (wood swells in winter, sticks, then shrinks — spring is when customers call), garden maintenance (fence panels, gate hinges), touch-up exterior paintwork
  • Autumn: bleeding radiators again, checking smoke alarm batteries, silicone seals before damp weather

Photo categories: before-and-after photos of completed jobs outperform stock images. For TV mounting, photograph the finished mount on the wall. For flat-pack, photograph the completed item. For door hanging, photograph the finished gap reveal. Specific, recognisable job photos answer the customer's pre-purchase question: "can this person do my job properly?"

Review responses: respond to every review within 48 hours. A personalised response that mentions the specific job ("glad the PAX wardrobe came together well") signals to Google that the review is legitimate and to prospective customers that you are attentive.

LocalBusiness Schema

Use LocalBusiness (or the more specific HomeAndConstructionBusiness) schema with a serviceType array covering each task category. Include your TrustMark membership in hasCredential and your DBS check in additionalProperty.
