Keyword Cannibalization: How to Find and Fix It

Keyword cannibalization happens when multiple pages on your site compete for the same search query. It confuses Google about which page to rank, dilutes ranking signals, and leads to unpredictable ranking volatility. Here's how to identify cannibalization and resolve it.

Keyword cannibalization occurs when two or more pages on the same domain target the same search query or a close variant of it. Instead of a single authoritative page earning rankings for the query, multiple pages split the ranking signal — backlinks, internal links, topical authority — causing lower rankings than a single consolidated page would achieve, ranking volatility as Google alternates between competing pages, and confusion about which page to send to users for a given query.

Cannibalization is not always obvious. It's rarely the result of deliberately duplicating content. More often it emerges gradually: a blog post is written about a topic, then a product page is later optimised for the same keyword, or an FAQ page is created that covers the same ground as an existing guide.

How to identify keyword cannibalization

Google Search Console query analysis. Filter the Performance report to a specific query and check "Pages" — if multiple URLs are appearing for the same query, those URLs are competing. URLs that alternately dominate the impressions for a query (switching between months) are a strong cannibalization signal.

Site: search operator. Searching site:yourdomain.com "target keyword" in Google reveals which pages contain the keyword prominently enough for Google to surface them. Multiple results for the same keyword may indicate competing pages.

Rank tracking with URL tracking. Rank tracking tools that record which URL ranks for each keyword can reveal cannibalization: if the tracked URL for a keyword changes month to month without you having made changes, Google is alternating between competing pages.

SEO audit crawl + keyword mapping. The most systematic approach: create a keyword map (one target query → one canonical page), then run a crawl that checks all pages for meta titles and H1s containing each mapped keyword. Pages that compete with the mapped canonical are cannibalization candidates.

Symptoms without the diagnostic. Cannibalization often manifests as: unexpected ranking volatility for a keyword where you have not made changes; a less relevant or lower-quality page ranking instead of your intended page; a page with many backlinks ranking poorly for its primary keyword because a newer page is competing; or a good-quality page stuck at positions 5–15 despite strong content.

Diagnosing the severity

Not all cannibalization is equally harmful. The severity depends on:

Intent overlap. If two pages target the same keyword but with clearly different intent (one informational, one transactional), Google may correctly distinguish between them and route different intent queries to each. This is intent matching, not cannibalization. True cannibalization occurs when two pages serve the same search intent for the same keyword.

Ranking signal split. If the competing pages have significantly different backlink profiles (one page has 20 external backlinks, the other has none), the signal is not effectively split — the well-linked page will typically dominate. The risk is that the less-optimised page occasionally wins and ranks lower than the well-optimised page would on its own.

Traffic and conversion impact. If both competing pages are ranking in the top 3 and driving good traffic, the business impact is low. Cannibalization primarily causes damage when it's causing a high-quality page to rank in positions 5–20 due to competition from a weaker page.

Fixing keyword cannibalization

301 redirect — the most decisive fix. If one page is clearly more authoritative, more comprehensive, and better converting than the other, redirect the weaker page to the stronger page. The 301 passes link equity and consolidates ranking signals. Best for: when one page is clearly superior and the other has little unique value.

Canonical tag — tells Google which page to prefer without removing the other page. Add <link rel="canonical" href="[preferred URL]"> to the competing page. The competing page remains accessible but its ranking signals consolidate to the canonical. Best for: when the competing page has value for users (traffic from other queries, good conversion rate) but you want Google to prefer the canonical for the primary target keyword.

Merge and consolidate — combine the best content from both pages into a single comprehensive page, 301-redirect the weaker page to the merged page. Best for: when both pages have unique content worth preserving, and the goal is to create a stronger single resource.

Differentiate intent — reoptimise one page to target a different query or a different intent phase. If a blog post and a product page are competing for "SEO audit," reoptimise the blog post for "SEO audit guide" or "how to do an SEO audit" (informational), and the product page for "free SEO audit tool" (transactional). Best for: when both pages have standalone value and can be differentiated without losing relevance.

Noindex the weaker page — if the competing page serves internal purposes (a category page, a tag page, a filtered search result) but doesn't need to rank, adding noindex removes it from the ranking competition. Best for: utility pages that shouldn't rank but must exist (CMS-generated archives, filtered views, paginated index pages).

Internal linking consolidation — internal links pass relevance and authority signals. If your internal links point to different URLs for the same keyword (some to the blog post, some to the product page), consolidate internal links to the single preferred page. This alone won't fully resolve structural cannibalization but is part of any fix.

Prevention

The long-term solution to cannibalization is a maintained keyword map: a document mapping each target keyword to a single canonical page. Before creating new content or optimising existing content, check the map to ensure the target keyword isn't already assigned to another page. When a new page is created, add it to the map and update internal linking to reinforce the page's canonical position.

Google has confirmed that when it cannot determine which of two competing pages is more relevant, it may rank neither as highly as one consolidated page would be ranked. Can two pages on the same site rank for the same keyword at the same time?

How do I fix cannibalization when both pages have backlinks?

Don't simply 301-redirect the less-linked page — check whether the page with more backlinks is also the better page for users (more comprehensive, better converting, more relevant to the target query). If yes: 301-redirect the weaker page to the stronger, well-linked page. This consolidates all link equity to the better page. If the page with more backlinks is actually the weaker page (older, thinner content, poorer UX): 301-redirect it to the new stronger page.
