Anchor Dilution
The weakening of anchor text relevance signals when a page receives inbound links with overly diverse or non-keyword anchor text, or when a keyword-rich anchor text profile becomes diluted by a large proportion of generic ("click here", "website") or brand anchors.
Definition
Anchor dilution describes how the keyword-relevance signal from a page\'s inbound anchor text can be weakened when the anchor text profile becomes dominated by generic, brand, or naked URL anchors rather than descriptive keyword-relevant text. Every inbound link carries anchor text (the clickable link text). When many links use keyword-rich anchor text matching a target query (e.g., "best project management software"), that consistent keyword signal helps Google understand the page\'s topical relevance for that query. When the same number of links uses diverse or generic anchors ("click here", "visit this site", the brand name, or the raw URL), the keyword relevance signal from anchors is diluted. Note: natural link profiles have diverse anchor text — a highly manipulated anchor text profile (80%+ exact-match keyword anchors) is a spam signal. The challenge is balancing natural anchor diversity (which Google expects and which avoids over-optimisation penalties) with sufficient keyword-relevant anchors to signal topical relevance. Anchor dilution becomes a problem when: link building campaigns generate exclusively generic anchors; press release distribution creates hundreds of "this link" or "company name" anchors without any keyword variation; automated link schemes use random or stripped anchor text to avoid detection.
Why it matters for SEO
Anchor text is a relevance signal for the destination page\'s topic — it\'s how Google understands what another site thinks your page is about. A healthy natural link profile has: branded anchors (your company name, your domain), naked URL anchors (your URL as text), generic anchors (click here, learn more), and keyword-relevant anchors (descriptive text matching your content\'s topic). The mix matters: too much keyword-exact anchor text looks manipulative; too little provides weak topical relevance signals. Monitoring anchor text distribution in your link profile (via Ahrefs, Moz, GSC) allows diagnosing anchor dilution or over-optimisation issues.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits outbound anchor text quality on the audited page — checking that internal links to target pages use descriptive, keyword-relevant anchor text rather than generic phrases. For inbound anchor text analysis (the link profile of the page being audited), a backlink database tool (Ahrefs, Moz, Majestic) is required. The audit flags internal links using generic anchor text ("click here", "read more", "learn more") that miss the opportunity to pass keyword relevance signals to destination pages.
