LINK BUILDING · SEO GLOSSARY
Anchor Text Ratio
The distribution of anchor text types across a site\'s backlink profile — branded, exact-match, partial-match, generic ("click here"), and naked URL — used to assess whether a link profile appears natural or over-optimised.
Definition
Anchor text ratio describes the proportion of different anchor text categories in a domain\'s or page\'s inbound link profile. Categories: **Branded** (the company or domain name, e.g. "DeepSEOAnalysis" or "Nike") — typically 40–60% of a natural link profile. **Naked URL** (the raw URL, e.g. "https://example.com") — common from directories and citations. **Generic** ("click here", "this article", "read more") — from editorial contexts where the writer linked without keyword intent. **Partial-match keyword** (contains the target keyword plus other words, e.g. "best SEO tools for agencies") — natural result of editorial linking. **Exact-match keyword** (precisely matches a target keyword, e.g. "SEO audit tool") — the most powerful for ranking signal but the most suspicious in high concentrations. A natural backlink profile has most anchors in the branded, naked URL, and generic categories with a small proportion of partial-match and exact-match. Over-optimised profiles (high percentage of exact-match keyword anchors) are a primary signal the Penguin algorithm (now part of Google\'s core algorithm) targets for manual action and algorithmic suppression.
Why it matters for SEO
Google\'s Penguin algorithm update (2012) specifically targeted manipulative link building characterised by over-optimised anchor text — links acquired primarily to pass keyword signals rather than for editorial value. A high percentage of exact-match keyword anchor text (e.g., 50% of all links using the exact target keyword phrase) is a strong signal of an unnatural link building campaign. Google may manually review or algorithmically suppress sites with suspicious anchor text distributions. Natural links from editorial sources use varied anchor text based on context, not uniform keyword-targeted anchors. Monitoring anchor text ratio allows site owners to detect and disavow over-optimised links before they trigger a penalty.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits outbound anchor text from crawled pages — the anchor text used in internal links and outbound links on your site. External inbound anchor text analysis requires a backlink data source (Google Search Console\'s Links report or a third-party backlink tool like Ahrefs, Majestic, or Semrush). The audit checks whether anchor text in internal links is descriptive and keyword-relevant (a positive signal) and whether any internal links use generic anchors ("click here", "read more") that waste the internal PageRank signal value.

Disavow File
A disavow file is a plain-text file submitted to Google Search Console that tells Google to ignore specific backlinks when assessing a site\'s link profile. It is used to remove the negative signal from toxic or spammy backlinks that could trigger a manual penalty or algorithmic link spam devaluation.
