Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

The practice of optimising content to be extracted and cited by AI answer systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode) rather than — or in addition to — optimising for traditional search ranking positions.

Definition

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is a content and technical strategy focused on making web content discoverable, extractable, and citable by AI answer systems — including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT with web browsing, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and other AI assistants that synthesise responses from multiple web sources. AEO emerged as a distinct discipline from traditional SEO as AI systems became primary interfaces for information retrieval, particularly for informational and research queries. The distinction from traditional SEO: traditional SEO aims to rank a page at position 1–3 in organic search results, driving click-through traffic to the website. AEO aims to have the website\'s content cited as a source in an AI-generated answer — which may or may not result in a click, but generates brand visibility and citation authority. AEO optimisation signals: (1) **Structured, extractable content** — content organised with question headings and direct answer paragraphs is more extractable by AI systems than prose-heavy narratives. (2) **FAQPage/HowTo schema** — explicit structured data that AI systems use to identify question-answer pairs for extraction. (3) **AI crawler access** — robots.txt must allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and other AI crawlers to discover and index the content. (4) **llms.txt** — a structured index file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that guides AI systems on what content exists and how to navigate it. (5) **Factual specificity** — AI systems cite content with specific, verifiable claims over vague generalizations; precise data points and concrete examples increase citation probability. (6) **Authoritative sourcing** — content that cites its own sources (data, research, expert quotes) is more likely to be treated as a credible source by AI systems that assess source quality. AEO vs GEO: the terms are used somewhat interchangeably, with GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) being the more commonly used term in academic and industry writing.

Why it matters for SEO

As AI answer interfaces capture an increasing share of informational query traffic, appearing in AI-generated answers becomes as important as ranking on page 1 of traditional search results. For informational and research queries, AI answers are becoming the first (and sometimes only) result a user sees. AEO/GEO optimisation determines which brands and websites are cited in these answers — effectively the "position 0" of AI search.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

DeepSEOAnalysis scores five AEO signals on every audit: AI crawler access (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended allowed in robots.txt), llms.txt presence and structure, FAQPage/HowTo JSON-LD server-rendered in initial HTML, question-heading ratio ≥20% of H2/H3 headings, and content section word count ≤400 words per heading. This is the five-signal AI visibility score reported on every audit.
