Catalogue SEO
The technical and on-page SEO strategy for large product catalogues — addressing the unique challenges of indexing thousands of product and category pages efficiently, managing duplicate content from variants and filters, and implementing Product schema at scale.
Definition
Catalogue SEO addresses the specific technical challenges of optimising large e-commerce product catalogues for organic search. Unlike single-product or small-catalogue SEO, catalogue SEO must work at scale — managing thousands of product pages, hundreds of category pages, and potentially millions of faceted URL variants systematically rather than page-by-page. Key catalogue SEO challenges: (1) **Scale of indexable pages** — a 50,000-product catalogue generates at minimum 50,000 product URLs plus category URLs plus faceted variants. Not all of these should be indexed; intelligent indexation decisions (which products to index, which to noindex when out of stock or thin) are critical. (2) **Out-of-stock and discontinued products** — products that go out of stock or are discontinued create SEO decisions: 301-redirect to the category, keep indexed with "in stock soon" messaging, or noindex. Each choice has different link equity and user experience implications. (3) **Product variant management** — products with multiple variants (size, colour) may have separate URLs for each variant or one URL for all variants. Separate variant URLs create near-duplicate content; they should canonicalise to the primary product URL. (4) **Product schema at scale** — implementing Product schema across thousands of products requires either CMS-level template implementation (so schema is auto-generated from product data fields) or developer implementation. Manual schema implementation at catalogue scale is not feasible. (5) **Crawl budget prioritisation** — with a large catalogue, Googlebot\'s crawl budget must be directed at important products (in-stock, high-margin, popular) rather than exhausted on discontinued products, thin variants, and faceted URLs.
Why it matters for SEO
Catalogue SEO determines how efficiently a large e-commerce site\'s organic potential is realised. Sites with 50,000 products but poor catalogue SEO may have only 20,000 indexed, with key products not ranking because they\'re rarely crawled, and crawl budget exhausted on low-value faceted URLs. Systematic catalogue SEO — proper canonical management, intelligent indexation, Product schema templates, crawl budget controls — unlocks the organic potential of large catalogues.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits individual product and category URLs from the catalogue: Product schema validation (confirming required properties — name, image, offers with price and availability — are present and correctly typed), CrUX field data, canonical tag correctness, and AI visibility signals. For catalogue-wide audit, DeepSEOAnalysis can be used to spot-check representative sample pages from each category and product type.
