Competitive SEO Analysis
Researching which keywords competitors rank for, which content gaps they expose, and which backlinks they have — to prioritise your own content and link-building strategy.
Definition
Competitive SEO analysis is the process of systematically studying the search presence of sites competing for the same queries you want to rank for. The analysis covers: (1) **Keyword gap** — queries competitors rank for that you don't; (2) **Content gap** — topics competitors cover that you don't, leaving less comprehensive coverage on shared topics; (3) **Backlink gap** — referring domains linking to competitors but not to you; (4) **SERP feature analysis** — which competitors hold featured snippets, People Also Ask placements, or AI Overview citations for your target queries; (5) **Site architecture comparison** — how competitors structure their pillar pages and content clusters vs your own. Primary tools: Ahrefs Site Explorer, Semrush Organic Research, Moz Link Explorer.
Why it matters for SEO
Knowing what competitors rank for tells you which battles are worth fighting and which angles are uncontested. A keyword gap analysis often reveals: queries where you have equal or better content but no targeting page; queries where top-ranking pages are weak enough to be displaced; and queries with meaningful volume that no competitor covers well. Competitive analysis transforms SEO from "create more content" into "create the specific content that fills gaps in the competitive landscape".
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit doesn't have access to third-party backlink databases needed for full competitive analysis. What it does: surfaces pages missing metadata, identifies internal linking gaps that reduce PageRank flow to key commercial pages, and when GSC is connected, shows striking-distance queries where impressions are high but clicks are low — signaling that competitors outperform you on queries you're already close to ranking for.
