Competitor Analysis (SEO)

The process of identifying which sites rank for your target queries, analysing why they rank there, and finding the gaps in their content, technical SEO, and structured data that you can exploit.

Definition

SEO competitor analysis is a structured investigation of the organic search landscape for your target queries, designed to answer three questions: who is competing for the same organic positions, what characteristics enable their rankings, and what gaps exist in their coverage that you can fill. The analysis begins with query-level competitor identification — the organic competitors for a specific query are the URLs ranking in positions 1–10 for that query, which may or may not overlap with your business competitors. Competitor analysis at the content level examines: content depth (word count, number of H2 subtopics, FAQ coverage, use of tables and comparison elements); structured data presence (FAQPage JSON-LD for Rich Results, HowTo, Article); content freshness signals (publish and update dates, dateModified in structured data); internal linking volume (referring internal links to the competing page from site-level audit tools); and missing subtopics (questions answered in PAA boxes, related searches, and competitor FAQs that the ranking content fails to address). Technical competitor analysis examines: Core Web Vitals via CrUX field data (LCP, INP, CLS from real Chrome user data — available via PageSpeed Insights); backlink profile at the page level (referring domain count and domain types pointing to the specific ranking URL, not the root domain); and structured data implementation (which JSON-LD types are present vs absent). The analysis outputs a prioritised content plan: gap pages (queries where competitors rank but your site has no page), differentiation rewrites (existing pages where competitors outrank you and specific gaps explain why), structured data opportunities (queries where no top-3 ranking page has FAQPage or HowTo schema), and topic cluster development where a competitor has topical authority across an entire subject area.

Why it matters for SEO

Competitor analysis defines what "good enough to rank" looks like for each target query — without it, content and technical decisions are made without understanding the competitive baseline. The most common SEO investment failures are: creating content that is shorter and less structured than every competing result; optimising technical factors (speed, schema) on pages that rank below better-content alternatives; and pursuing topic clusters that a competitor has already locked up with 5+ years of content depth and thousands of referring domains. Competitor analysis prevents these by establishing the competitive bar before the investment is made. On the structured data dimension specifically: identifying queries where no competing page has FAQPage schema represents a fast CTR-improvement opportunity — implementing schema competitors lack can produce Rich Results that improve effective CTR at the same ranking position, within days of Google reprocessing the page.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit benchmarks your page\'s structured data, AI visibility signals, and Core Web Vitals against competing pages. Run DeepSEOAnalysis on a competitor URL to see their structured data gaps, AI visibility score, and CrUX field data — the comparison reveals your relative technical position. The audit specifically identifies: structured data types present on the competitor page (FAQPage, Article, Product, BreadcrumbList) and whether they are correctly implemented; question-heading ratio on competing pages; and Core Web Vitals field data. Use this to target structured data types that competitors are missing as a differentiation vector.
