Content Performance

Content performance measures how effectively individual pieces of content achieve SEO and business objectives — combining organic traffic generated, ranking positions held, organic conversions attributed, and engagement signals. Unlike ranking (a single metric), content performance is multidimensional: a page can rank well but generate few conversions (intent mismatch); or convert well but rank poorly (low traffic ceiling).

Content performance analysis is the process of evaluating whether published content is achieving its SEO goals. The metrics and their interpretation depend on the content\'s purpose. **For informational content (blog posts, guides, resource pages)**: (1) **Organic sessions** — from GSC or GA4 filtered to Organic Search. The primary traffic signal. (2) **Average position** — from GSC. For pages ranking 11–20 (page 2), there\'s significant traffic opportunity if position can be improved to 1–10. (3) **Click-through rate** — from GSC. Low CTR at a good position indicates a meta title/description that doesn\'t compete well in the SERP — test changes. (4) **Engagement rate** (GA4) — filtered to organic landing sessions on this page. Low engagement rate (<30%) indicates intent mismatch. (5) **Organic conversions** — via GA4 key events attributed to this landing page. **For commercial content (product pages, pricing pages, landing pages)**: organic sessions × organic conversion rate = organic revenue or leads. This is the page-level P&L for SEO. **Content performance lifecycle**: (1) **Ramp** (0–9 months post-publication) — new content progressively improves rankings as it accumulates authority. Performance is low and growing. (2) **Peak** — rankings stabilise at the page\'s natural ceiling given current domain authority and content quality. (3) **Decay** — rankings and traffic decline as competitors publish fresher, more comprehensive content. **Content decay detection**: compare GSC performance data for the same page 12 months apart. Pages that ranked in positions 3–8 and have drifted to 10–20 with decreasing impressions are decaying. The fix is typically content refresh: updating stats, adding sections covering newly relevant subtopics, improving on-page structure. **Content performance reporting** should segment by content cluster/topic rather than individual pages — a cluster of 10 pages all targeting the same topic area should be evaluated together (total impressions, total clicks, cluster conversion rate) to understand topical authority health.

Content performance data is what turns content strategy from guesswork to investment allocation. It reveals: which content clusters are generating returns and deserve more investment; which pages are decaying and need refresh before rankings are lost; which pages rank well but don\'t convert (intent or UX problem, not ranking problem); and which keyword opportunities the current content portfolio has failed to capture. Without content performance analysis, SEO teams tend to keep publishing new content while existing high-value content decays — an inefficient allocation of content creation budget.
