Content Silo

A site architecture strategy that groups related content into thematic sections (silos), with strong internal linking within each silo and controlled linking between silos — concentrating topical authority within each theme.

Definition

A content silo is a site architecture strategy in which related pages are grouped into thematic sections (silos), with internal linking structured to keep link equity concentrated within each topic group. The concept was popularised as a way to signal topical authority to search engines: if all pages about "technical SEO" link primarily to other technical SEO pages (and less frequently to unrelated topics), the topical signal for that cluster is stronger than if internal links are distributed randomly across topics. Silo structure types: (1) **Physical silo** — URL structure reflects the hierarchy: /technical-seo/, /technical-seo/xml-sitemaps/, /technical-seo/robots-txt/. Internal links strictly stay within the silo, with the top-level silo page acting as the hub. (2) **Virtual silo** — URL structure may not reflect hierarchy (flat URLs like /xml-sitemaps/), but internal linking is structured to group thematically related pages. The pillar-and-cluster model is essentially a modern evolution of the virtual silo concept. **Practical application**: pure physical silos with strictly controlled cross-linking are difficult to maintain on large sites and can create UX issues (users can\'t navigate to related content in adjacent silos without going through the homepage). Most practitioners use a hybrid approach: strong contextual links within each topic cluster, with cross-cluster links where genuinely relevant.

Why it matters for SEO

Content silos address the same problem as pillar-and-cluster architecture: Google\'s topic models benefit from sites that demonstrate depth and organisation within subjects. A site where all content about a topic links together in a coherent structure signals topical authority more clearly than a site with randomly distributed internal links. The silo concept emphasises the architecture dimension of topical authority — not just what topics are covered, but how the internal link structure connects them.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit checks for silo-related internal linking signals: crawl depth and page hierarchy (do related pages link to each other and to a common hub?); orphan pages within apparent topic clusters (pages whose URL path suggests they belong to a silo but have no inbound internal links from other pages in the same cluster); and the pillar page linkage pattern (do cluster pages link back to the pillar/hub page that represents the top of the silo?). A well-structured content silo produces a distinct crawl pattern where the hub page has many inbound internal links from cluster pages, and cluster pages are reachable within 2–3 clicks from the hub.
