Doorway Pages

Pages created solely to rank for a specific keyword and then redirect or funnel visitors to a different destination — essentially SEO intermediaries with no independent user value. A violation of Google\'s spam policies; pages created to rank for queries they don\'t genuinely serve are classified as doorway page spam.

Definition

Doorway pages (also called gateway pages or bridge pages) are web pages designed to rank well for a specific keyword or set of keywords but that provide no real value independently — they exist only to capture search traffic and then forward users elsewhere. Classic doorway page patterns: a page that ranks for "plumber in Austin TX" but immediately redirects to a generic homepage; hundreds of near-identical city/state pages with the same content and a city name swapped in ("best plumber in [city]", "best plumber in [city2]"); pages specifically written to rank for one query but that contain no unique information for that query, only links to the "real" content. Google\'s guidelines identify several doorway page characteristics: (1) having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions/cities that funnel visitors to one page, (2) pages generated to funnel visitors into the actual usable or relevant portion of the site, (3) substantially similar pages closer to the search results than the actual destination, (4) pages that exist as entrances to a site but aren\'t useful or browseable on their own. The distinction between legitimate and doorway: A legitimate city landing page for a multi-location plumbing company has real location-specific content — the actual address, actual service area, real customer reviews from that location, local contact number, and content that helps a visitor in that city understand what services are available to them. A doorway page is the same boilerplate with a city name swapped in, providing nothing a visitor couldn\'t get from the generic homepage. Programmatic SEO page sets that have real data differentiation per location are not doorway pages; programmatic pages that are identical except for a city name variable are doorway pages.

Why it matters for SEO

Doorway pages trigger Google\'s spam classification and can result in the affected pages being suppressed in rankings or, in systematic cases, a manual action against the entire domain. More practically: doorway pages are caught in increasingly fine-grained ways by Google\'s quality algorithms. The investment in creating them is wasted when they get suppressed. The legitimate alternative — building real, data-backed location or topic pages — has sustainable ranking value. The test: if a user landed on this page from Google, would they find it useful and complete on its own, without needing to click through to a different page to get what they actually needed?

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit checks for doorway page patterns by analysing the crawled page set: detecting clusters of pages with very high text similarity (near-identical content across multiple city or keyword variants), pages with very thin unique content relative to template boilerplate, and pages that redirect immediately to a different URL rather than serving content. Pages in a cluster where >90% of the content is identical across the cluster are flagged as potential doorway pages for manual review.
