Internal Link Equity

Internal link equity is the PageRank-derived authority flow that passes between pages on the same website through hyperlinks. Pages linked frequently from authoritative internal pages rank better than pages that are orphaned or buried deep in the site architecture.

Definition

Internal link equity (sometimes called internal PageRank or internal link juice) is the mechanism by which link authority distributes through a site\'s internal linking structure. While Google\'s external PageRank is determined by backlinks from other websites, internal link equity shapes how that externally derived authority is distributed across the site\'s own pages. **How internal link equity flows**: (1) **From high-authority pages** — pages that receive many external backlinks accumulate authority. Internal links from these pages pass equity to the pages they link to. A homepage with hundreds of external links pointing to it distributes equity through its internal links to pillar pages, category pages, and featured content. (2) **PageRank sculpting** — the practice of structuring internal links to concentrate equity on high-priority pages. `nofollow` on internal links was historically used for PageRank sculpting; Google largely ignores this now, but the architectural principle of linking intentionally to priority pages remains valid. (3) **Link depth and crawl depth** — pages 3+ clicks from the homepage receive less equity than pages 1–2 clicks away. Deep pages (requiring 5+ clicks) often have both poor equity distribution and crawl budget waste. (4) **Anchor text signals** — internal link anchor text is a relevance signal. Linking to a page with keyword-rich anchor text passes topical context alongside equity, helping Google understand what the target page is about. (5) **Orphaned pages** — pages with no internal links pointing to them receive no internal equity, are rarely crawled, and typically do not rank. Internal link audits identify orphaned pages as a common quick win. (6) **Link volume dilution** — pages with hundreds of internal links on them dilute the equity per link. A sidebar with 200 links passes far less equity per link than a targeted contextual link from a focused page.

Why it matters for SEO

Internal link equity is directly controllable by the site owner — unlike backlinks, which depend on third-party decisions. Optimising internal linking structure to concentrate equity on priority pages (key category pages, high-value landing pages, cornerstone content) is a high-leverage technical SEO activity. Many sites have poor internal link equity distribution: homepages link to 50+ pages; product pages are buried 4+ clicks deep; orphaned blog posts exist with no internal links. Fixing internal link architecture can improve rankings for priority pages without any external link building.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit crawls the site and maps internal link structure: identifies orphaned pages (crawled pages with zero internal links pointing to them), calculates crawl depth (clicks from homepage) for all discovered pages, identifies pages with excessive internal link counts (>200 links per page, diluting equity), and checks internal anchor text for keyword relevance. The crawl path also reveals which pages Googlebot is likely to discover and how frequently — proxies for internal equity distribution.
