Intrusive Interstitials Penalty

A Google mobile ranking signal (January 2017) that demotes pages that show intrusive interstitials — popups, slide-in banners, or full-screen overlays — that block users from accessing page content immediately after clicking a search result on mobile.

Definition

The Intrusive Interstitials Penalty (announced August 2016, launched January 2017) is a ranking signal that reduces rankings for mobile pages that show certain types of interstitials immediately after a user clicks through from a search result. An interstitial is any overlay, popup, or full-page element that blocks access to the page\'s main content. Google identified this as a significant mobile user experience problem: users who click a search result expect to see the content; instead they encounter a popup or full-page overlay that must be dismissed before the content is visible. Penalised interstitial types: (1) Popups covering the main content immediately on page load (either immediately or after a short delay); (2) Standalone interstitials that must be dismissed before content is visible; (3) Above-the-fold layouts where the content is pushed below the fold by a large banner that must be scrolled or dismissed. Exempt interstitial types: (1) Cookie consent notices (legally required by GDPR/CCPA); (2) Age verification notices (legally required for age-restricted content); (3) Login dialogs for content that is not publicly accessible; (4) Small, easily dismissible banner ads that don\'t cover a significant portion of the above-fold content. The Intrusive Interstitials signal is distinct from the Page Layout Algorithm (which targets pages where content is dominated by advertising above the fold, not specifically dismissible popups).

Why it matters for SEO

Intrusive interstitials are a conversion rate optimisation favourite that conflicts with SEO requirements on mobile. Large email capture popups that appear immediately on page load — common in e-commerce and content sites for list building — are the primary target of this signal. Sites that show these popups immediately when a user arrives from mobile organic search face ranking demotions. The workaround: delay popup triggers until users have spent time on the page (indicating genuine interest rather than immediately-after-click disruption), or restrict popup behaviour to non-mobile-organic-search traffic segments.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

DeepSEOAnalysis checks for interstitial patterns that appear in the initial page HTML: large overlay elements with high z-index values, modal dialog patterns, and elements that visually cover the main content area above the fold. Interstitials triggered by JavaScript after page load are harder to detect in a static HTML audit — but common popup and modal library patterns in the page\'s scripts are flagged as potential interstitial risk. Cookie consent banners (typically in the `<footer>` or a fixed-position element) are identified and excluded from the interstitial flag.
