Local SEO Ranking Factors
The three primary signals Google uses to rank businesses in local search results (the local pack / map pack): proximity (how close the business is to the searcher), relevance (how well the business matches the query), and prominence (how well-known and trusted the business is — based on reviews, citations, and website authority).
Definition
Local SEO ranking factors determine how a business appears in Google\'s local pack (the three-listing map result) and local organic results for geographically-targeted queries. Google\'s local ranking documentation identifies three primary factors: (1) **Proximity**: the physical distance between the business location and the searcher (or the location specified in the query). Proximity is the only factor that cannot be optimised — a business can\'t move closer to its customers by SEO actions. However, by strengthening relevance and prominence, businesses can extend their effective ranking radius. (2) **Relevance**: how well the business matches the user\'s query. Primary Google Business Profile category is the strongest relevance signal — the category tells Google what type of business it is. Services added to GBP, business description, and the content of the linked website all contribute to relevance matching. Correct category selection (choosing the most specific accurate category rather than a broad one) directly affects which queries the listing matches. (3) **Prominence**: how well-known and trusted the business is in its area and industry. Prominence signals: GBP review count and average rating (the most actionable prominence lever), citation volume (how many directories and websites list the business with consistent NAP data), website backlink authority from locally-relevant sources, and overall online presence (social media activity, press mentions, article features). Beyond these three, Google also considers: accuracy of GBP information (complete, up-to-date hours, phone, website), GBP posting activity (regular posts signal an active business), photo quality and recency, and Q&A engagement. For local organic results (below the map pack), standard SEO factors (page authority, on-page relevance, LocalBusiness schema) apply alongside local signals.
Why it matters for SEO
Understanding the three local ranking factors allows businesses to allocate local SEO effort proportionally to where the leverage is. Proximity is fixed; businesses should focus effort on relevance (GBP category optimisation, service listings, website content) and prominence (review acquisition, citation building, local link building). The map pack appears above organic results for local intent queries — capturing a map pack position is often more valuable than a page-one organic position for local commercial queries, particularly on mobile where the map pack occupies the full screen above the fold.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits LocalBusiness schema on website pages — the on-page structured data that contributes to local relevance and prominence signals. The structured data check confirms that `address`, `geo`, `telephone`, `openingHoursSpecification`, and `areaServed` properties are correctly structured and present in the initial server-rendered HTML. AI visibility scoring is relevant for local queries — AI search engines increasingly surface local business recommendations, and FAQPage schema on location pages and service pages improves AI citation likelihood.
