Passage Ranking
A Google capability (announced October 2020, US launch February 2021) that allows Google to rank specific passages within a long page independently of the page\'s overall topic — enabling deep, specific content to surface for narrow queries even when embedded within broader articles.
Definition
Passage ranking (Google\'s term: "passage indexing" or "passage-based ranking") is Google\'s ability to identify and rank a specific passage within a web page for a narrow query, even if the overall page covers a much broader topic. Before passage ranking, a very specific long-tail query ("how to remove stripped screw without a screwdriver using a rubber band") might not match any page that primarily targeted that topic. A comprehensive home repair guide that included this specific tip in a section might not rank for the narrow query because the page\'s overall topic relevance was for the broader "home repair" subject. With passage ranking, Google can identify that specific section of the comprehensive guide as highly relevant to the narrow query and rank it — even if the page as a whole is about home repair generally. **What this means for content strategy**: (1) Comprehensive long-form content covering many subtopics benefits from passage ranking — each subtopic section can independently match narrow queries. (2) Passage ranking rewards clear section structure (H2/H3 headings, clean paragraphs) because Google needs to delineate passages within the page. (3) Passage ranking is distinct from Featured Snippets — a passage-ranked result may or may not show as a Featured Snippet; passage ranking affects organic ranking position, not just featured snippet selection. (4) Passage ranking doesn\'t override page-level relevance — a page that is entirely about an unrelated topic won\'t rank for queries unrelated to its primary subject just because a sentence mentions the topic.
Why it matters for SEO
Passage ranking makes long-form, well-structured content more valuable: a single comprehensive guide can rank for dozens of specific subtopic queries that it addresses in individual sections. For content strategy, this rewards depth (covering a topic comprehensively with distinct sections for each subtopic) over narrow single-topic posts. Clear heading structure that delineates sections makes it easier for Google to identify passage boundaries.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit doesn\'t directly assess passage ranking (that requires search result analysis). The audit does check the structural signals that make passage ranking effective: heading hierarchy depth (H2/H3 structure that creates distinct, addressable sections), content section length (very long, unbroken text without headings limits passage boundary identification), and content depth per page (pages that comprehensively cover multiple subtopics benefit most from passage ranking). Pages with poor heading structure and long unbroken text blocks are flagged as passage ranking underperformers.
