Pogo-Sticking
Pogo-sticking is the behaviour of a user clicking a search result, quickly returning to the SERP, and clicking a different result — signalling that the first page did not satisfy the query. Google has described "short clicks" (rapid SERP return) as negative satisfaction signals and "long clicks" as positive ones.
Definition
Pogo-sticking describes the pogo-stick motion of a user bouncing rapidly between the SERP and search results: they click a result, find it unsatisfying, immediately return to the SERP, and click another result. The term is commonly used in SEO to describe this specific SERP-return behaviour — distinct from a general "bounce" (leaving a site without further navigation, which could be from any traffic source). From a search engine perspective, rapid SERP return is a dissatisfaction signal: the user clicked the result expecting it to answer their query, found it did not, and immediately sought a different answer. Google\'s patents describe this behaviour as a "short click" — a negative signal. Sustained engagement after the click (what Google calls a "long click") is a positive satisfaction signal. **Causes of pogo-sticking**: (1) **Intent mismatch** — the page targets a keyword but doesn\'t match the user\'s actual intent. A page optimised for "content calendar" that provides a theoretical discussion when the user wanted a downloadable template will produce rapid pogo-sticking. (2) **Poor above-the-fold experience** — if the first visible content (before scroll) is not immediately reassuring to the user that they\'ve found what they\'re looking for (wrong content type, no clear relevance signal in the headline, intrusive popups), they leave before engaging. (3) **Slow page load** — users who wait more than 3 seconds for a page to load have higher abandonment rates. The click-return-to-SERP can happen before the page even loads. (4) **Poor content quality** — thin, inaccurate, or poorly written content produces immediate return to SERP regardless of intent alignment. (5) **Misleading title/meta description** — titles that overpromise relative to page content produce pogo-sticking when users find the content doesn\'t match expectations set by the SERP snippet. Pogo-sticking is related to but distinct from dwell time — pogo-sticking is specifically the rapid SERP return behaviour; dwell time is the measured duration of the visit.
Why it matters for SEO
While Google hasn\'t officially confirmed that pogo-sticking directly causes ranking demotions, the underlying behaviour — rapid user dissatisfaction with a search result — is conceptually aligned with signals Google does track. Pages with high pogo-sticking rates tend to rank lower over time as Google\'s systems learn that users prefer other results. The practical fix is the same regardless of whether pogo-sticking is a direct ranking factor: improve intent alignment (make sure the page serves what users actually want when they search the target keyword), improve above-the-fold clarity (users should immediately recognise the page as relevant), and improve content quality (so users find their answer and stay).
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit doesn\'t directly measure pogo-sticking (user behaviour requiring real-user analytics or GSC CTR + engagement data). The audit checks for structural signals that correlate with high pogo-sticking rates: intent mismatch indicators (title and H1 not clearly aligned with the target query type — informational query vs transactional page); above-the-fold content quality (LCP and content structure — does the page surface relevant content immediately, or is the above-the-fold area dominated by navigation, headers, and advertising?); Core Web Vitals (poor LCP means users may abandon before seeing content); and content depth relative to query complexity (thin content on high-competition informational queries typically produces poor engagement).
