Position Click Ratio (CTR by Position)

The empirically observed click-through rates associated with each Google search result position — showing that position 1 captures approximately 25–35% of clicks while position 10 captures under 2%, used to model expected traffic from ranking improvements.

Definition

Position click ratio (more commonly called CTR by position or SERP CTR) is the distribution of click-through rates across organic search result positions 1–10+. Industry studies (Backlinko, Advanced Web Ranking, SparkToro) consistently show a steep CTR decline with increasing position: (1) Position 1: approximately 25–35% average CTR (varies significantly by query type, SERP features, and device). (2) Position 2: approximately 13–18%. (3) Position 3: approximately 9–12%. (4) Positions 4–5: approximately 5–8% combined. (5) Positions 6–10: approximately 1–4% combined. (6) Position 11+: under 1%. These are averages with significant variance by query type: (1) **Navigational queries** ("facebook login") — position 1 captures nearly 100% of clicks; other positions almost nothing. (2) **Branded queries** — similar concentration at position 1. (3) **Informational queries with AI Overviews** — AI Overview appears above position 1, capturing some click share that would otherwise go to position 1 organic result. Position 1 CTR is lower for queries with AI Overviews. (4) **Queries with Shopping ads** — ads above organic results capture click share from organic position 1. (5) **Queries with featured snippets** — featured snippet positions (often called "position 0") capture significant click share, but the page that earns the featured snippet also holds position 1 in most cases. Position click ratio is used to model traffic from ranking improvements: "if we improve from position 5 (7% CTR) to position 2 (15% CTR) for a 10,000-impression/month keyword, we should expect approximately 800 additional monthly clicks (15% vs 7% × 10,000)."

Why it matters for SEO

Position click ratio data is the primary input for modelling SEO traffic opportunity from ranking improvements — converting "position change" (the output of SEO work) into "traffic change" (the commercial result). It enables prospective ROI calculations: "ranking from position 8 to position 3 for this keyword set is worth approximately $X in additional organic traffic value." Understanding that CTR drops sharply below position 5 reinforces the importance of targeting the top-3 positions rather than accepting "on page 1" as a success metric.
