Definition

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites owned or controlled by one entity, created specifically to build backlinks to a target site ("the money site"). PBN sites are typically: expired domains purchased for their residual link equity (domains that once had legitimate links pointing to them), repopulated with thin or spun content to make them appear active, and used to publish articles with links back to the target site. PBN operators typically try to disguise the network by using different hosting IPs, different domain registrars, different WHOIS information, and different WordPress themes to avoid footprint detection. Why PBNs were appealing: buying an expired domain with existing link equity and pointing it at your site was a shortcut to acquiring backlinks that would take legitimate work to earn.
