STRUCTURED DATA · SEO GLOSSARY

Product Schema

Product schema is a Schema.org structured data type that describes a product for sale — name, description, image, price, availability, reviews — enabling rich results including price, availability, and star ratings directly in Google Search results. It is the highest-priority structured data type for e-commerce.

Definition

Product schema (schema.org/Product) enables Merchant Listings rich results (previously Google Shopping free listings), Product rich results with prices and availability, and AggregateRating star displays in organic SERPs. **Required properties for rich result eligibility**: name, image (absolute URL, minimum 1 required; multiple images recommended), description, Offers (with price, priceCurrency, availability using https://schema.org/InStock, https://schema.org/OutOfStock enum URIs — not "InStock" string). **Strongly recommended**: sku (product identifier), brand (Brand sub-type with name), aggregateRating (AggregateRating with ratingValue between 1.0–5.0 and reviewCount ≥1 — enables star ratings in SERPs, significant CTR driver). **Availability values**: must use full URI format: https://schema.org/InStock, https://schema.org/OutOfStock, https://schema.org/PreOrder, https://schema.org/Discontinued. Using "InStock" (without the schema.org prefix) is a validation error Google has warned about. **Price format**: price must be a number (not "$49.99"), priceCurrency must be an ISO 4217 currency code (USD, EUR, GBP). **Implementation**: Product JSON-LD must be server-rendered in the initial HTML — not GTM-injected, not useEffect-rendered. Googlebot validates Product schema from the server-rendered HTML; schema visible only in the rendered DOM may not be processed. **Common errors**: ReviewCount of 0 (blocks aggregateRating display), availability as string without schema.org/ prefix, price as a string with currency symbol, image as a relative URL, headline/name containing promotional text ("SALE — Running Shoes 40% OFF"), missing required Offers sub-properties.

Why it matters for SEO

Product schema with aggregateRating directly increases organic CTR by displaying star ratings and review counts alongside product listings in Google Search. The Merchant Listings integration (for eligible retailers) enables free product appearance in Google Shopping results. Price and availability display in organic results helps users qualify intent before clicking, improving the quality of organic sessions. For e-commerce, Product schema is the highest ROI structured data investment after basic meta tag optimisation.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit validates Product JSON-LD from the server-rendered HTML: required property completeness (name, image, Offers), Offers sub-property validation (price as number, priceCurrency as ISO 4217, availability as full schema.org URI), aggregateRating validation (ratingValue 1.0–5.0 range, reviewCount ≥1), image absolute URL check, and server-rendering confirmation (schema present in initial HTTP response vs client-side only). Flags the specific property errors and provides corrected markup.
