Product Variant SEO
The SEO strategy for handling ecommerce product variants (different colours, sizes, materials) — deciding whether to canonical all variants to the primary product URL, make specific variants independently indexable, or noindex variant pages that add no unique search value.
Definition
Product variants present a core SEO architecture decision: when a product comes in multiple colours, sizes, materials, or configurations, the ecommerce platform typically generates a separate URL for each combination. Without explicit SEO handling, these variant URLs can create: near-duplicate content (multiple URLs serving near-identical pages), link equity fragmentation (external links to specific variant URLs don\'t consolidate on the primary product), and crawl waste (Googlebot crawling hundreds of low-value variant URLs per product). The three variant URL strategies: (1) **Canonical to primary**: all variant URLs (`/product/shirt?color=blue&size=M`) use `rel="canonical"` pointing to the primary product URL (`/product/shirt`). Google consolidates all signals on the canonical. Use when: variants have no independent search demand (nobody searches specifically for "navy blue M shirt"). (2) **Separate indexable variant pages**: create distinct, permanently-reachable URLs for variants with significant independent search demand, each with unique content addressing the specific variant. Use when: the variant has its own search volume ("Air Max 90 Infrared" has specific search demand; the colourway is itself a search target). Requires unique images, unique descriptions, and unique title/H1 per variant. (3) **Noindex variant pages**: variant pages that have no unique content and no independent search demand — noindexed to prevent crawl waste and duplicate content signals, while remaining accessible to users who navigate to them. Which strategy to use: check GSC for variant-specific query impressions. If a colour/material/size drives impressions for specific queries, it may justify indexable variant pages. If no variant-specific queries appear, canonical to primary and reduce crawl surface.
Why it matters for SEO
Incorrect variant handling is one of the most common technical SEO mistakes on ecommerce sites — it creates duplicate content at scale (an apparel site with 1,000 products in 8 colours creates 8,000 variant URLs without explicit canonical handling), wastes crawl budget, and fragments link equity across variant URLs rather than consolidating it on the primary product. At scale, this directly suppresses category page rankings because the site\'s crawl efficiency and authority are diluted across thousands of near-duplicate pages.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis checks the submitted URL for canonical configuration — confirming whether a product page self-canonicals or points to a primary variant. For variant URLs with parameter-based patterns (`?color=`, `?size=`), the canonical configuration determines whether Google consolidates or fragments signals. The audit reports canonical URL and any canonicalization issues.
