Query Clustering

Grouping search queries with the same or overlapping search intent and SERP result sets so a single piece of content can target multiple keyword variations rather than creating separate pages for each minor keyword variant.

Definition

Query clustering (also called keyword clustering or SERP clustering) groups related search queries based on their intent and the URLs that currently rank for them. The underlying principle: if two queries show the same set of ranking URLs (the same pages rank top 5 for both queries), Google considers both queries to have identical or very similar intent and a single well-optimised page can rank for both. Clustering by SERP overlap is the most reliable method because it\'s based on empirical ranking data rather than semantic assumption: two queries that look similar in meaning can have very different SERPs (indicating different intents), while two queries that look different can have nearly identical SERPs (indicating the same intent, addressable by one page). Query clustering workflow: (1) collect all keyword targets; (2) pull the top-5 or top-10 ranking URLs for each keyword; (3) group keywords where ≥3 of the top-5 URLs overlap; (4) each cluster = one target page; (5) choose the highest-volume keyword in the cluster as the primary target (and title/H1 anchor); (6) incorporate the other cluster keywords naturally in the content as variations. Effective clustering reduces keyword cannibalisation (two pages competing for the same query) and prevents page proliferation (creating 50 thin pages for 50 variations when one comprehensive page would rank for all 50).
