Query Refinement
The process by which Google suggests modified or alternative search queries to help users better express their intent — through Related Searches, "Did you mean", autocomplete suggestions, and People Also Ask boxes.
Definition
Query refinement refers to both the user behaviour of modifying a search query after seeing initial results, and the Google SERP features that facilitate this behaviour. From a technical standpoint, query refinement encompasses: (1) **Autocomplete suggestions** — the predictions Google shows as a user types a query, based on query volume and relevance. (2) **"Did you mean"** — Google\'s spelling correction and query clarification suggestions shown when it detects a probable typo or ambiguous query. (3) **Related searches** — the set of alternative queries shown at the bottom of the SERP (and sometimes inline), allowing users to explore adjacent topics. (4) **People Also Ask** — related question queries that Google surfaces mid-SERP. (5) **Search Within a Site (Sitelinks search box)** — for navigational queries, Google may show a site-specific search box. From an SEO and content strategy perspective, query refinement data reveals: which alternative phrasings Google associates with a target query (useful for content brief development and header structuring); the full semantic range around a topic (what users search for before and after the primary query); and content gaps (refinement queries that no existing page on the site addresses). Tools that systematically extract query refinement data: Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Semrush, Answer The Public (autocomplete-based), and AlsoAsked (PAA-based).
Why it matters for SEO
Query refinement data reveals the full range of user intent around a topic — the sequence of queries a user makes as they research a subject. A content strategy that addresses the full query refinement landscape around a primary topic (the primary query, the pre-query research queries, the post-query narrowing queries) creates a natural pillar-and-cluster architecture where each query variation has a dedicated page or section. This breadth of coverage is what Google\'s systems associate with topical authority.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit checks whether the site\'s crawled pages address the visible related search and PAA queries for common query types associated with the site\'s apparent topic focus. Question-format headings that match People Also Ask patterns for the target queries indicate good query refinement coverage. The `SearchAction` structured data for a site-wide search box (via `WebSite` JSON-LD) is also checked — this enables the Sitelinks search box for navigational queries, which is a form of on-SERP query refinement for the site\'s content.
