Rank Decay
The gradual loss of keyword ranking positions over time without an active algorithm update or competitive change to explain it — typically caused by increasing freshness signal age (older content loses freshness scoring), failure to update content to cover new subtopics, or the accumulation of competitive content that incrementally displaces older pages.
Definition
Rank decay is the slow, progressive loss of ranking positions that affects most published content without active maintenance. Unlike a sudden ranking drop (which typically has a specific cause: an algorithm update, a technical regression, a competitor earning a strong link), rank decay happens gradually over 6-24 months and often goes unnoticed until the cumulative position loss is significant. Rank decay mechanisms: (1) **Freshness signal decay**: Google\'s ranking system gives preference to recently published or recently updated content on freshness-sensitive queries. A page published in 2022 that hasn\'t been updated competes against content published in 2024-2025 for queries where recency is a relevant ranking factor. (2) **Coverage gap accumulation**: as a topic evolves, new subtopics, questions, and entities emerge. A 2023 guide to a software category that doesn\'t mention AI integration features available in 2025 has coverage gaps that newer content covers — and Google evaluates relevance against current query intent, not historical intent. (3) **Competitive displacement**: new high-quality content from competitors, informational aggregators, or AI-assisted publishing operations incrementally competes for the same queries. Each month that passes without a page update is a month of increasing competitive pressure from newer entries. (4) **Authority decay**: the rate of new links pointing to a page slows over time as the content becomes less novel and shareable — while newer pages in the same niche accumulate fresh links. Rank decay detection: compare GSC impressions year-over-year by page (same month this year vs same month last year). Pages with >20% YoY impression decline are experiencing rank decay. Position comparison alone is insufficient because SERP feature composition changes can affect CTR without changing rank.
Why it matters for SEO
Rank decay is the primary reason that content requires ongoing maintenance rather than one-time publication. A content programme that publishes 100 articles without any refresh cadence will see the oldest articles decay into obscurity within 18-24 months on most competitive queries, even without major algorithmic changes. The most efficient SEO content investment is often refreshing high-potential decaying content (which has existing authority, internal links, and some residual rankings) rather than publishing new content on already-covered topics. GSC impression data is the most reliable decay detector because it reflects Google\'s actual relevance assessment rather than third-party rank tracking tool snapshots.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits the technical signals that contribute to rank decay: structured data freshness (datePublished vs dateModified — Google uses both to evaluate freshness), AI visibility score (content that\'s poorly chunked or lacks FAQ schema is less likely to be cited by AI overviews, which increasingly captures queries before they generate organic clicks), and Core Web Vitals (pages with Poor CWV face growing ranking headwinds as more competitors achieve Good CWV). Refreshing decaying content should include updating structured data dates, improving GEO signals, and addressing any technical quality gaps identified by the audit.

Rank Fluctuation
Normal short-term variation in keyword ranking positions — typically 1-5 positions up or down — caused by Google\'s real-time ranking signals (freshness scoring, personalisation signals, SERP feature composition), which does not reflect a genuine gain or loss in organic visibility and should be distinguished from sustained ranking changes that indicate a real trend.
