Search Operators (Google)

Special commands entered into Google\'s search bar that filter or refine results — used by SEOs for competitor research, index coverage checks, duplicate content detection, and site analysis. Key operators: `site:`, `inurl:`, `intitle:`, `filetype:`, `cache:`, and quote-wrapped `"exact phrase"` searches.

Definition

Google search operators are query modifiers that tell Google\'s search engine to apply specific filters or constraints to the results. For SEO, they\'re a rapid research tool that doesn\'t require any external tool access. Common SEO-relevant operators: **`site:example.com`** — returns all pages Google has indexed from a domain or subdomain. Use to check indexation count (roughly — the number is not precise), verify specific pages are indexed, or check for unintended indexed pages (try `site:example.com/tag/` to see if tag archive pages are indexed). **`site:example.com "query text"`** — check if a specific phrase appears in Google-indexed pages from a domain. **`inurl:keyword`** — finds pages with a specific word in the URL. Use for competitor URL structure analysis: `inurl:alternatives site:competitor.com` shows their alternatives pages. **`intitle:keyword`** — finds pages with a specific word in the `<title>` tag. Use for topic coverage analysis and identifying who ranks with specific title patterns. **`"exact phrase"`** — quotation marks force exact phrase matching. Use for duplicate content detection: paste a distinctive sentence in quotes and see if any other sites have indexed the same text. **`filetype:pdf`** — finds indexed PDF files. Use to find indexed PDFs on your own site that might be consuming crawl budget or containing sensitive information. **`-site:example.com keyword`** — exclude a site from results. Use to see who ranks for a query excluding your own site. **`OR`** — finds results matching either of two terms: `"rank math" OR "yoast seo" schema`. Note: Google has removed several historical operators (cache: was deprecated in 2024, link: was removed years ago). The remaining operators are subject to change without notice — Google has progressively reduced the precision and availability of operators over time.

Why it matters for SEO

Search operators allow quick, free SEO research directly in Google\'s interface: checking index coverage, detecting duplicate content, analysing competitor URL structures, and verifying that specific pages are or aren\'t indexed — without requiring access to paid SEO tools. For agencies doing initial site assessments, `site:` combined with content-type operators quickly reveals unexpected indexed content (staging pages, admin pages, thin archives). For duplicate content detection, the exact phrase operator is faster than a full crawl for specific investigation questions.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit doesn\'t use search operators — it crawls the live site directly and records what\'s in the server HTTP response rather than querying Google\'s search interface. The audit\'s indexability check (what pages are indexable vs blocked vs canonical-redirected) covers the same ground that `site:` operator research addresses, with the additional context of crawl data for internal pages that may not yet have been indexed.
