Search Visibility

Search visibility (also called organic visibility or share of voice) is a metric that aggregates a site\'s ranking positions across a defined keyword set, weighted by search volume, to produce a single percentage representing how much of the total available search traffic in that keyword set the site is capturing. A site ranking position 1 for all tracked keywords has 100% search visibility; a site not ranking for any has 0%.

Definition

Search visibility converts a keyword ranking portfolio into a single trackable metric for executive reporting and trend monitoring. It answers "are we gaining or losing ground in our target keyword set?" without requiring ranking-by-ranking analysis. **How search visibility is calculated** (most SEO tools use a variant of this): for each tracked keyword, look up the site\'s current ranking position → look up the typical CTR for that position (using an industry CTR curve: position 1 ≈ 28%, position 2 ≈ 15%, etc.) → multiply by the keyword\'s monthly search volume → sum across all keywords → divide by the total theoretical traffic if the site ranked position 1 for all tracked keywords × that keyword\'s search volume → this ratio, expressed as a percentage, is the search visibility score. The exact formula varies by SEO tool: Sistrix Visibility, Semrush Visibility, Ahrefs Organic Traffic, and Moz Domain Authority each have proprietary implementations, making cross-tool comparison problematic. **What drives search visibility changes**: ranking improvements (moving from position 8 to position 3 for a high-volume keyword significantly increases visibility); new keyword rankings (ranking for a previously unranked keyword with high search volume); ranking losses (competitor overtaking a position); SERP feature changes (a featured snippet appearing pushes organic results down, reducing CTR at a given position and therefore visibility score); search volume changes (keyword volume fluctuations due to seasonality or trends affect visibility even without ranking changes). **Search visibility as a leading indicator**: because visibility aggregates rankings (which precede traffic), it moves before traffic changes appear in analytics — a visibility drop signals a traffic reduction coming in 2–4 weeks, giving earlier warning than analytics alone.

Why it matters for SEO

Search visibility is useful for tracking SEO performance at a portfolio level rather than keyword-by-keyword. For reporting to leadership, a visibility trend chart (up 12% this quarter vs prior quarter) communicates SEO momentum more clearly than a spreadsheet of individual keyword ranking changes. Visibility also makes competitor benchmarking concrete: comparing your visibility score for a shared keyword set against competitors shows relative market share in search, not just absolute ranking positions. However, visibility scores are tool-specific and non-transferable — a "15% Semrush Visibility" and a "15% Sistrix Visibility" measure different things and cannot be compared.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit doesn\'t calculate search visibility directly (that requires ranking data across a keyword set), but identifies technical factors that suppress it: indexation gaps (un-indexed pages can\'t rank — visibility assumes indexed pages); canonical misconfiguration (split authority across canonical/non-canonical variants reduces the ranking potential of individual pages in the tracked set); Core Web Vitals failures (affect Page Experience ranking — depressing ranking positions relative to technically sound competitors); structured data gaps (missing Rich Results eligibility reduces effective CTR at a given position — reducing the traffic captured, which affects visibility metrics based on modelled CTR).
