Share of Voice

The percentage of total organic search visibility a website captures for a defined set of keywords, relative to all competing sites — a market-level metric measuring SEO dominance within a topic or industry.

Definition

Share of voice (SOV) in SEO measures what proportion of total organic search visibility a given site captures across a defined keyword set. If there are 100 keywords in your tracked set and your site appears in the top 10 for 40 of them (with varying positions), your share of voice is calculated by weighting each keyword appearance by its estimated position-based click-through rate and summing across the full keyword set. Share of voice is a relative metric — it compares your visibility against all other sites competing for the same keywords. A share of voice of 15% means your site captures 15% of the total organic search opportunity for the tracked keyword set; competitors collectively capture the remaining 85%. SOV is used as a market-share analogue for SEO: tracking whether your organic footprint is growing or contracting within an industry keyword set, and benchmarking your competitive position against specific named competitors. Calculating SOV requires: (1) a defined keyword set representing your target market; (2) regular rank tracking data (daily or weekly position for each keyword); (3) a click-through rate model to weight positions (position 1 receives more click weight than position 5); (4) summing weighted impressions for your site vs total market impressions across all ranked sites.

Why it matters for SEO

Share of voice is the executive-level SEO metric that connects keyword rankings to market position. Individual keyword rankings tell you "we rank #3 for X" — share of voice tells you "we dominate 22% of this market\'s organic search landscape and have grown from 15% a year ago." This framing resonates with business stakeholders who understand market share as a concept but find individual keyword position reports abstract. SOV also enables competitor benchmarking: if your SOV dropped from 22% to 18%, you can identify which competitors gained the 4% and which specific keyword categories shifted, rather than auditing hundreds of individual keywords.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

DeepSEOAnalysis does not calculate share of voice for a keyword set (which requires tracking a defined keyword list across multiple sites over time). SOV calculation requires rank tracking software (SEMrush, Ahrefs, Sistrix, AccuRanker). The audit does surface per-URL visibility signals: canonical correctness, structured data quality, and Core Web Vitals — the technical factors that affect whether individual rankings are achievable and sustainable. Improving these technical foundations is a prerequisite for increasing share of voice.
