Topical Cluster
A group of interlinked content pieces covering subtopics within a broad topic — all linked to and from a central pillar page — used to build topical authority on a subject and improve rankings across the cluster.
Definition
A topical cluster (also called a content cluster or hub-and-spoke model) is a content architecture pattern where a broad topic is covered through a central pillar page (the hub) and multiple supporting cluster pages (the spokes), all of which are internally linked to each other. The pillar page covers the broad topic at a high level with links to each subtopic cluster page. Each cluster page covers one subtopic in depth, with a link back to the pillar page. The internal linking creates a semantic relationship between all pages in the cluster, signalling to Google that the site covers the topic comprehensively. Examples: a pillar page on "email marketing" with cluster pages on "email subject lines," "email list segmentation," "email A/B testing," "email deliverability," and "email automation." Each cluster page targets a specific long-tail query; the pillar page targets the head query. As cluster pages earn links and engagement, they pass PageRank to the pillar page via internal links; the pillar page distributes PageRank to cluster pages in return.
Why it matters for SEO
Google\'s ranking algorithm evaluates topical authority — how comprehensively a site covers a given subject — as a signal for ranking pages in that topic area. A site that covers only one aspect of a topic ranks less well than a site that comprehensively covers the full topic and subtopics with interlinked content. The topical cluster model builds this comprehensive coverage systematically. It also solves internal cannibalization: rather than multiple thin pages competing for similar queries, the cluster architecture assigns each query to one page and links them together, preventing any single page from competing against the others. Topical clusters are particularly effective in competitive niches where domain authority alone is insufficient to rank — deep topic coverage provides a differentiated signal.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis checks internal linking structure for topical cluster signals: whether pages within a content group are interlinked (every cluster page links to the pillar, pillar links to each cluster page), whether the anchor text used in internal links is keyword-descriptive and consistent with the target query of each cluster page, and whether content depth (assessed by heading structure and word count) is sufficient to serve as a cluster page vs a pillar page. Orphan detection flags cluster pages with no internal links pointing to them from within the cluster.
