Video Sitemap

A video sitemap uses Google\'s video sitemap extension to declare video content on a site — providing metadata (title, description, thumbnail URL, duration, publication date) that helps Google index video content for Video Rich Results in SERPs and the Videos tab in Google Search.

Definition

Google cannot fully "watch" videos to extract their content — it relies on metadata provided by the site to understand video subject matter. A video sitemap (using the video: XML extension within a standard sitemap) provides this metadata: **Required elements**: <video:video> containing <video:thumbnail_loc> (absolute URL of a representative thumbnail image — recommended minimum 160×90px), <video:title> (video title matching on-page title), <video:description> (text description of the video content). **Recommended elements**: <video:content_loc> (direct URL of the video file, if available) or <video:player_loc> (URL of the video player page — use for embedded YouTube videos), <video:duration> (in seconds), <video:expiration_date> (if the video is time-limited), <video:publication_date> (ISO 8601), <video:family_friendly> (yes/no for safe-search filtering), <video:live> (yes/no for live streams). **Relationship to VideoObject JSON-LD**: Google recommends implementing both a video sitemap AND VideoObject JSON-LD on the page for maximum video search visibility. The VideoObject schema on the page itself enables Video Rich Results in SERPs (the video result format showing title, thumbnail, duration, and upload date directly in results). The video sitemap helps Google discover and index the video content faster. **For YouTube embeds**: sites embedding YouTube videos can include video sitemaps declaring the YouTube player URL — this helps Google associate the video content with the embedding page. However, YouTube videos rank primarily on youtube.com — the embedding page gets contextual signals from the association.

Why it matters for SEO

Video content on pages without video sitemaps or VideoObject JSON-LD is less likely to be indexed for video search results and less likely to produce Video Rich Results in SERPs. For sites where video is a primary content format (tutorial sites, SaaS product demo pages, course platforms), video sitemap and VideoObject schema implementation directly affects whether video content appears in the growing video search result formats Google shows.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit detects video content on crawled pages (video elements, YouTube/Vimeo embeds) and validates: whether VideoObject JSON-LD is present for identified video content (thumbnail, name, description, uploadDate, duration), whether required VideoObject properties are present, and whether video sitemap extension tags (video:video elements in sitemap entries) appear for sites with significant video content.
