Voice Search SEO
Optimising content to appear as the spoken answer to voice queries — which tend to be longer, more conversational, and question-phrased than typed searches.
Definition
Voice search SEO is the practice of optimising content to be selected as the spoken answer when a user searches via voice assistant (Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa, Cortana). Voice queries differ from typed queries in three ways: (1) **Length** — voice queries average 7–8 words vs. 2–3 for typed; (2) **Conversational phrasing** — "What's the best SEO audit tool?" vs. "best SEO audit tool"; (3) **Question structure** — a high proportion of voice queries start with "how", "what", "where", "when", "why", "who". Voice search results are typically the featured snippet for the query or the top-ranked result. On smart speakers (Google Home, Amazon Echo), only one result is read aloud — position is binary: you either win the voice result or you don't.
Why it matters for SEO
Voice search is increasingly merging with AI assistant search. The same content optimisation principles that help voice search (direct answers, FAQ structure, conversational phrasing, featured snippet optimisation) also help AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews) select and cite your content. Building content that answers questions directly and concisely — with a clear answer in the first 50 words, followed by supporting detail — is the core strategy for both voice search and AI visibility. The AI visibility score in DeepSEOAnalysis measures question-heading ratio (≥20% of H2/H3s framed as questions) and content chunkability (average section length ≤400 words) — both of which align with voice search optimisation.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit checks question-heading ratio across all crawled pages (headings starting with How, What, Why, When, Where, Who) and flags pages with less than 20% question headings as AI/voice-visibility opportunities. It also checks for FAQ sections with `FAQPage` JSON-LD — pages with `FAQPage` schema are more likely to generate rich results that anchor voice search answers and AI citations.
