AI Overviews

Google\'s AI-generated answer panels that appear above traditional blue-link results for many informational and commercial queries — synthesising responses from multiple sources with citations — formerly called Search Generative Experience (SGE) during the 2023–2024 experimental phase.

Definition

AI Overviews (AIO) are Google\'s AI-synthesised answer panels that appear at the top of search results pages for a large and growing subset of queries. Launched broadly in the US in May 2024 under the name "AI Overviews" (previously "Search Generative Experience" or SGE during the 2023–2024 Labs experiment), AIO uses a large language model trained on web content to synthesise a direct answer with cited sources. AIO behaviour: **Not all queries trigger AIO** — Google displays AIO primarily for informational and some commercial-investigation queries. Transactional queries (near-purchase intent), navigational queries, and queries already well-served by a featured snippet or rich result may not show AIO. **Citations are selective** — AIO typically cites 3–8 sources per response. Being cited is not correlated perfectly with ranking position — pages outside the top 10 can be cited if they contain a uniquely useful answer. **CTR impact is contested** — early studies suggest AIO can reduce click-through for cited pages (users get the answer without clicking) but increases the value of citation itself (being cited still drives brand awareness and some clicks). **Content that gets cited** — clear direct-answer paragraphs under question-format headings; content with FAQPage JSON-LD; authoritative sources with clear E-E-A-T signals; content that directly addresses the specific query intent. **Opting out**: publishers can use `<meta name="robots" content="nosearch">` or Google-Extended user agent disallow in robots.txt to prevent their content from being used in AIO. This also removes the content from future AI model training. Most publishers with editorial content choose not to opt out, as AIO citation is a visibility channel.

Why it matters for SEO

AI Overviews now appear on a significant percentage of Google searches — estimates range from 7% to 15% of all queries in the US as of mid-2024, with ongoing expansion. For informational queries (the content marketing pillar for most SaaS and e-commerce SEO strategies), AIO often appears above position 1 organic results. Sites that are cited in AIO for their target queries see their content surfaced to users who may never scroll to the organic blue links. Not being cited in AIO for your key informational queries — while competitors are — is an emerging competitive disadvantage.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit\'s GEO score checks the technical signals associated with AI Overview citation probability: FAQPage/HowTo JSON-LD in server-rendered HTML (schema that signals structured, answerable content), question-heading ratio (≥20% of H2/H3s as questions), content section length ≤400w average (short extractable chunks), AI crawler access (Googlebot must not be blocked from content you want AIO to consider), and llms.txt for AI-specific content signaling.
