Click Depth
The number of clicks required to reach a page from the homepage — a crawl efficiency signal. Pages more than 3 clicks from the homepage may be crawled less frequently and can accumulate fewer internal links, weakening their ranking potential.
Definition
Click depth (also called crawl depth) measures how many clicks (link traversals) are required to navigate from a site\'s homepage to a given page, following only internal links. The homepage is at depth 0 or 1 (depending on convention). Direct links from the homepage put pages at depth 1. Pages linked only from those pages are at depth 2. And so on. Click depth matters for two reasons: (1) Crawl frequency — Googlebot prioritises shallow pages over deep ones. Pages at depth 4+ may be crawled less often, meaning content updates reach the index more slowly. (2) PageRank distribution — internal link equity flows through the link graph. Each hop dilutes the PageRank passed from the homepage. A page at depth 5 may receive very little internal link equity, weakening its ranking potential relative to its content quality. The recommended ceiling: important content pages should be reachable in 3 or fewer clicks from the homepage. For large sites (e-commerce, news), hub pages, category pages, and updated navigation menus are the mechanisms for maintaining shallow depth at scale.
Why it matters for SEO
On large sites, important pages buried at depth 6–8 may be crawled irregularly and rank weakly despite strong content. The fix is architectural: adding hub pages that aggregate and link to important deep pages, adding those pages to the main navigation, and building horizontal sitemaps that provide direct links. A flat site architecture — where most important pages are within 3 clicks of the homepage — is both a crawlability improvement and a PageRank efficiency improvement.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit constructs an internal link graph from the crawled pages and computes the click depth of each page from the detected homepage. Pages at depth 4+ are flagged as potential crawl depth issues, with the specific link paths that could be shortened and the hub-page patterns that reduce depth.
