Content Gap Analysis
The process of identifying topics and keywords that competitors rank for but your site does not — revealing content publishing opportunities that could capture search demand currently going to competitor pages.
Definition
Content gap analysis compares the keyword rankings of your site against one or more competitors to surface queries where competitors have content (and rankings) but you don\'t. The process: (1) Export the keyword ranking data for your site and target competitors from a tool like Ahrefs, Semrush, or Google Search Console. (2) Find keywords where competitors rank in positions 1–20 and your site ranks outside the top 100 or has no ranking at all. (3) Group the gaps by topic cluster and search volume. (4) Prioritise by volume, competition level, and topical fit. (5) Create content targeting those gaps. There are two types of gaps: topic gaps (entire subject areas where you have no content) and freshness gaps (topics you covered but competitors have more recently updated, comprehensive, or authoritative content on). Content gap analysis is distinct from keyword research — keyword research finds all queries with search demand, while gap analysis specifically identifies where competitors are capturing demand that your site currently misses.
Why it matters for SEO
Content gap analysis focuses publishing effort on the highest-return opportunities: queries with demonstrated search demand (competitors are getting traffic) in areas where your site has no representation. It\'s more actionable than pure keyword research because the existence of competing ranking pages confirms that Google treats the query as addressable by content. The gaps reveal where topical authority is missing from your site — building content in those areas strengthens the overall topical cluster and internal link structure.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits on-page content quality signals (heading structure, content completeness, freshness) and internal link architecture (topical cluster coverage), but does not perform cross-competitor keyword ranking comparison (which requires a rank tracking data subscription). For gap analysis, pair the audit results with keyword data from Ahrefs, Semrush, or Google Search Console.
