ALGORITHM UPDATES · SEO GLOSSARY

Link Spam Update

A recurring Google algorithm update that identifies and neutralises unnatural, purchased, or otherwise manipulative links — reducing their PageRank contribution or triggering manual penalties.

Definition

Google\'s Link Spam Update (first major named rollout: July 2021) is an algorithmic signal designed to identify and neutralise backlinks that do not reflect genuine editorial judgment: paid links, link exchanges, links in low-quality guest post networks, UGC spam (forum comment and profile link schemes), and links from sites that exist primarily to sell links. When the algorithm identifies a link as likely spam, it nullifies it — the link ceases to pass PageRank. Google periodically rolls out named iterations of link spam algorithm improvements; each typically results in volatility in rankings for sites with heavily manipulative link profiles. Link spam updates interact with Google\'s SpamBrain AI and may overlap in effect with broad core algorithm updates.

Why it matters for SEO

Sites with link profiles built through link schemes are vulnerable to each Link Spam Update. After such an update, rankings may drop suddenly as previously credit-counted links are nullified. Recovery requires identifying and disavowing spam links via Google Search Console\'s Disavow Tool, or waiting for subsequent crawls to reassess the profile. Building only editorial links is the durable strategy; link schemes offer temporary gains that are progressively harder to sustain as link spam detection improves.
