LINK BUILDING · SEO GLOSSARY
Editorial Link
An inbound link earned naturally because another site chose to cite your content, without payment, request, or reciprocal arrangement.
Definition
An editorial link is a backlink placed voluntarily by another website\'s editor or author because they genuinely found the linked content valuable enough to reference. The key distinguishing characteristic: the linking site makes a free, uncoerced choice to link. No payment changes hands, no agreement to reciprocate, and no link-exchange arrangement exists. Editorial links are distinguished from paid links (compensated placements), advertorial links (sponsored content), user-generated links (forum posts, comments, profiles), and reciprocal links (mutual link exchanges). In Google\'s PageRank model, editorial links are the intended input — links as votes of confidence from one publisher to another. This is why Google\'s guidelines prohibit schemes designed to manufacture the appearance of editorial links without the genuine editorial judgment.
Why it matters for SEO
Google\'s ranking algorithm treats links as editorial endorsements — authority flows through them. Editorial links carry full link equity because they represent genuine third-party validation. Non-editorial links (paid, UGC, reciprocal schemes) should be tagged with rel="nofollow", rel="sponsored", or rel="ugc" attributes to signal their non-editorial nature to Google. A site\'s editorial link profile — the quantity and authority of domains that have voluntarily linked to it — is one of the strongest signals of domain authority and topical credibility in Google\'s ranking model.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits backlink-related signals indirectly: it checks whether internal links use appropriate rel attributes and flags link markup anomalies. External editorial link profile analysis requires Google Search Console\'s Links report or a third-party backlink tool.
