Panda

A major 2011 Google algorithm update (later incorporated into the core algorithm in 2016) that targeted thin, low-quality, and duplicate content at the site level — site-wide quality scoring that could suppress all pages of a low-quality site regardless of individual page quality.

Google Panda (launched February 2011) was one of the most significant algorithm updates in Google\'s history, introducing the concept of site-wide quality scoring. Before Panda, each page was evaluated primarily on its own signals. Panda introduced a site-level quality classifier that assessed the average quality of a site\'s content and applied a quality adjustment to all pages on the site. A site with a high proportion of thin, duplicate, or low-quality pages received a site-wide Panda "penalty" — even high-quality individual pages on that site ranked lower due to the site\'s overall quality signal. Panda targeted: content farms (sites generating massive volumes of thin, low-quality content); sites with duplicate or near-duplicate content; sites with very thin or shallow content across most pages; sites with high bounce rates and poor user engagement signals; and sites where user-generated content (forums, comment sections) generated large volumes of thin pages. Panda ran as periodic updates until 2016 when it was incorporated into Google\'s core algorithm and began running continuously rather than in discrete update waves. The incorporation into core meant that sites could recover more quickly when quality improved — they no longer had to wait for a periodic Panda refresh.

Panda established the principle of site-wide quality affecting individual page rankings — a principle that has been reinforced through the Helpful Content System and subsequent core updates. Sites with a low average content quality across their URL space are penalised even when individual flagship pages are well-written.
