Pirate Update

The Pirate Update (August 2012, significantly strengthened in October 2014) was a Google algorithm change that uses DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) copyright takedown notice volumes as a ranking signal. Sites that receive high volumes of valid DMCA takedown requests from copyright holders are demoted in rankings as a signal that they host or link to substantial quantities of infringing content. The mechanism: copyright holders submit DMCA removal requests through Google\'s Transparency Report process; Google uses the pattern of requests against specific sites as an input to its ranking system. A site that has received millions of valid DMCA requests (file-sharing sites, torrent index sites, streaming sites with unauthorised content) is significantly demoted.
