UGC Links

Links in user-generated content — forum posts, blog comments, social profiles — identified with rel="ugc" to signal non-editorial origin to Google.

Definition

UGC links (User-Generated Content links) are hyperlinks placed by site visitors in areas where users control content creation: blog comment sections, forum threads, community boards, review platforms, Q&A sites, and user profile pages. Google introduced the rel="ugc" link attribute in 2019 as a distinct signal from rel="nofollow" to indicate that a link originated from user-contributed content rather than from the site\'s editorial team. UGC links should not be confused with editorial links placed by the site\'s own editors. The UGC attribute tells Google: "this link was placed by a user, not by us — our editorial judgment was not applied to it." Google may choose to pass some link equity through UGC links or treat them as nofollow hints, but sites that fail to mark UGC links appropriately risk being penalised for appearing to manufacture editorial link signals.

Why it matters for SEO

UGC link spam — placing links in blog comments, forum posts, and profile pages to build backlink count — was historically a widespread black-hat tactic. Google\'s Penguin algorithm and subsequent link spam updates specifically target link patterns characteristic of UGC spam: high volume of links from comment sections, irrelevant forum threads, and low-authority profile pages. Sites that host UGC content (forums, blogs with comment sections, community platforms) should apply rel="ugc" to all user-submitted links to clearly separate their editorial links from user-generated links.
