Podcast SEO

Optimising podcast content for discovery in search engines and podcast directories — including episode title and description optimisation, transcript publishing as SEO content on the website, structured data (`PodcastEpisode`, `PodcastSeries`), and internal linking from blog content to episode pages.

Definition

Podcast SEO covers two distinct distribution channels: **Search engine SEO** — optimising the podcast\'s web presence (website, show notes pages, and episode pages) to rank in Google for podcast-related queries. **Podcast directory discovery** — optimising the podcast\'s presence in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other directories for their internal search functions. The search engine SEO component is more controllable and more directly measurable: **Podcast website / episode show notes** — each episode should have a dedicated URL on the podcast\'s website with a unique title tag (including the episode topic keyword), meta description, full show notes (not just the episode description — expanded notes with linked resources and key takeaways), and the embedded audio player. This creates an indexable web page for each episode. **Transcripts** — full episode transcripts published on the episode page create substantial unique text content indexed by Google. Without a transcript, an episode page is essentially an audio file and a short description — very little for Google to index. With a 6,000-word transcript, it\'s an indexable document that can rank for the conversational queries the episode covers. Tools: Descript, Otter.ai, Rev, or AI transcription. **Structured data** — Google has schema types for podcast content: `PodcastSeries` (for the show itself, including `broadcastDisplayName`, `webFeed` RSS URL, `author`) and `PodcastEpisode` (for individual episodes, with `partOfSeries`, `datePublished`, `description`, `associatedMedia` with audio file URL). Adding these to episode pages may improve podcast discovery in Google\'s dedicated podcast search results. **Episode title SEO** — the episode title is both the RSS feed title (what directories display) and (if structured as the `<h1>`) the primary SEO signal for the episode page. Include the topic keyword in the title, but don\'t sacrifice clarity for keyword density. **Internal linking** — link from blog posts on the same topic to relevant podcast episodes, and vice versa. This distributes link equity from established blog content to the newer podcast episode pages.

Why it matters for SEO

Podcast discovery via search is a significant growth channel that most podcast producers underinvest in. Users searching "how to do X" or "what is Y" may discover a podcast episode that covers the topic if the episode has an indexable transcript and a well-structured show notes page — the audio file itself provides nothing for Google to rank. Publishing transcripts is the single highest-return podcast SEO investment: it converts audio content that Google can\'t read into text content that Google can rank, without creating any new content.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit crawls episode pages (discovered via the sitemap or internal links) and checks: unique title and meta description per episode, content depth on episode pages (very short pages with only a player embed and 100 words of description vs pages with full transcripts), `PodcastEpisode` structured data presence, and internal link count to and from episode pages. Episode pages with no text content beyond the description are flagged as thin content opportunities for transcript addition.
