The concentration of topically relevant entities, concepts, and vocabulary in a piece of content relative to its length — high semantic density signals topical depth; low semantic density indicates thin or unfocused content.

Semantic density is a content quality metric that measures how many meaningful topical signals (entities, concepts, relationships, vocabulary terms associated with the target topic) a piece of content contains relative to its word count. It is distinct from keyword density (which counts how often specific words appear) because it operates at the semantic and entity level — measuring the richness of meaning, not the repetition of terms. High semantic density content: a 1,500-word article about structured data SEO that mentions JSON-LD, schema.org, FAQPage schema, Rich Results Test, Google Search Central, entity types, property validation, and server-side rendering is densely semantic — each content unit adds meaningful topical signal. Low semantic density content: a 3,000-word article about structured data that mostly restates the same general points with different phrasing has low semantic density despite its length — padding reduces density without adding semantic value. Semantic density in practice: Google\'s language models (BERT, MUM, and their successors) assess text at the semantic level, not the keyword level.
