SERP Feature

A non-standard element in Google\'s search results that goes beyond the traditional "ten blue links" — including featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, local packs, knowledge panels, shopping results, image carousels, video results, and AI Overviews.

Definition

A SERP feature is any element in Google\'s search results page that is not a standard organic result (title, URL, meta description). SERP features are designed to serve specific query intents more directly — showing the answer, showing a map, showing product listings — often reducing or eliminating the need for the user to click through to a website. Major SERP features: (1) **Featured Snippet** (Position 0) — a direct answer extracted from a web page, displayed above organic results. (2) **People Also Ask (PAA)** — collapsible Q&A boxes with related questions. (3) **Local Pack / Local 3-Pack** — map and three business listings for local intent queries. (4) **Knowledge Panel** — entity information card on the right side for branded/entity queries. (5) **Shopping Results** — product listings with price and image from Google Merchant Center. (6) **Image Carousel** — horizontal strip of images from various sources. (7) **Video Results** — YouTube and other video content for video-intent queries. (8) **News Box** — recent news articles for news-intent queries. (9) **AI Overviews** — AI-generated summaries citing multiple web sources (rolled out broadly in 2024). (10) **Sitelinks** — additional page links shown below a brand\'s result for navigational queries. SERP features affect click-through rates: some (featured snippets answering a simple question) reduce CTR for the featured page (zero-click); others (rich snippets with FAQ dropdowns, video thumbnails) increase CTR by making the result more prominent.

Why it matters for SEO

SERP features determine the competitive landscape for any given query. A query that triggers an AI Overview above all organic results may receive dramatically lower organic CTR than the same query without AI Overviews. A local intent query that triggers a local 3-pack gives a premium position to Google Business Profile optimisation rather than traditional organic ranking. Understanding which SERP features appear for target queries is essential for: (1) Setting realistic CTR expectations for organic rankings. (2) Determining which optimisation strategies are relevant (structured data for rich snippets, GBP for local pack, FAQPage for PAA). (3) Prioritising queries where organic results are the primary display format.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

The audit checks the structured data types that enable SERP feature eligibility: FAQPage JSON-LD (enables FAQ Rich Results and signals PAA/AI Overview relevance); HowTo JSON-LD (enables HowTo Rich Results for step-by-step content); Product JSON-LD with AggregateRating (enables product rich snippets with star ratings); VideoObject JSON-LD (enables video rich results with duration and thumbnail); LocalBusiness JSON-LD (contributes to local pack context); and Article JSON-LD (date and author display in some SERP contexts). The audit also checks whether the structured data appears in the server-rendered HTML — client-side injected JSON-LD may not be processed in time for Googlebot\'s first crawl to enable rich result eligibility.
