Service Area Business (SAB)
A business that serves customers at their location rather than at a fixed business address — including plumbers, electricians, cleaners, mobile mechanics, and delivery services. Google Business Profile handles SABs differently from storefront businesses: address can be hidden, and service area is defined by radius or a list of cities/postcodes.
Definition
A Service Area Business (SAB) is a local business type in Google\'s local SEO framework for businesses that travel to serve customers rather than receiving customers at a fixed storefront address. GBP provides specific SAB configuration: **Address visibility**: SABs can hide their physical address from the GBP listing (common for home-based businesses that don\'t want clients arriving at their home). The address is still used for map pin placement in the local algorithm but is not displayed to public searchers. **Service area definition**: SABs define their service area either by: (1) a radius from a central point (e.g., "30 miles from London"), or (2) a list of specific cities, postal codes, or regions they serve. Google uses the service area definition to determine which local queries the SAB is eligible to appear in. **SAB ranking signals**: because SABs lack a visible storefront address, proximity signals are replaced by service area match signals. A plumber in London who serves Zones 1–3 should define a service area covering those postcodes to appear in local queries from those areas. **GBP categories**: SAB category selection follows the same priority as storefront businesses — use the most specific applicable category ("Plumber", "Emergency Plumber", "Plumbing Supply Store") rather than generic categories. **Multiple location SABs**: a cleaning company serving multiple cities can create one GBP listing per primary service city if they have a legitimate business presence (not a virtual address) in each, or create one central SAB listing with a broad service area.
Why it matters for SEO
SABs face a local SEO disadvantage relative to storefront businesses because they lack a physical address that provides a direct geo-proximity signal for local queries. Correctly configuring the service area in GBP is the primary mechanism for appearing in local pack results for queries from users in the defined service area rather than only from queries near the hidden business address. For SABs, the review volume and quality from customers in the defined service area is a particularly important ranking signal because it demonstrates actual customer interactions within the claimed service area.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis audits the SAB\'s website rather than GBP configuration directly. For SABs, the audit checks: LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService JSON-LD with `areaServed` property listing the service areas (city names or region names as Place objects), `hasMap` linking to the GBP listing, `telephone` and `address` properties (even if the address is hidden in GBP, it should be in schema for Google\'s local relevance algorithm), and contact page crawlability.
