Time on Page
Time on page is an analytics metric measuring how long a user spends on a page before navigating away. It is often cited as an indirect SEO signal, but its relationship to rankings is indirect and noisy — Google does not use time on page as a direct ranking factor, and the metric has significant measurement limitations.
Definition
Time on page in Google Analytics (both UA and GA4) is calculated as the time between two recorded events — typically the pageview event and the next event (another pageview, click, or interaction). This creates a critical measurement gap: if a user lands on a page, reads the entire article, and closes the browser tab, Google Analytics records zero time on page for the last page in the session (no subsequent event to calculate the interval). This makes time on page an unreliable metric for single-page sessions and last-page-in-session measurements. **GA4 improvement**: GA4 uses engaged sessions (sessions with more than 10 seconds of active engagement) and engagement rate as replacements for bounce rate and time on page from Universal Analytics. GA4\'s "Average engagement time" is a more accurate measurement because it uses visibility and interaction events to estimate actual engagement duration, not just page-to-page navigation intervals. **Relationship to SEO**: Google does not use GA time-on-page data in rankings — Google doesn\'t have access to most sites\' GA data. However, related signals from Google\'s own data (Pogo-sticking — returning to SERPs immediately after clicking a result; dwell time — the time between SERP click and return to SERP, measured by Google directly in Search) are believed to be indirect quality signals. A page where users consistently return to SERPs within seconds signals poor relevance or quality for that query. **What time on page signals about content**: pages with very low time on page (relative to content length) may signal: content doesn\'t match the query intent (user didn\'t find what they searched for), content quality issues (writing is poor, information is wrong), page load failure on content elements, or technical errors that prevent content from displaying.
Why it matters for SEO
While time on page itself is not a ranking factor, the user behaviour it proxies for — whether content satisfies the search intent — does relate to ranking signals Google can measure directly (SERP click patterns, query abandonment rates). Improving content that generates low engagement (by better matching the intent, improving readability, or enriching the information) is more likely to improve rankings than chasing the metric itself.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit does not access analytics data directly. Engagement quality is assessed indirectly through content structure signals: heading hierarchy (does the content have clear sections for navigation?), content length relative to query depth (is there enough content to satisfy the intent?), and question-heading ratio (do headings match the questions users are likely asking?).

Pogo-Sticking
Pogo-sticking is the behaviour of a user clicking a search result, quickly returning to the SERP, and clicking a different result — signalling that the first page did not satisfy the query. Google has described "short clicks" (rapid SERP return) as negative satisfaction signals and "long clicks" as positive ones.
