LINK BUILDING · SEO GLOSSARY

Unlinked Mention

A reference to a brand, product, or website name on another website that does not include a hyperlink — a link building opportunity where the site that mentioned you can be contacted to convert the mention into a backlink.

Definition

An unlinked mention (also called an unlinked brand mention or link reclamation opportunity) occurs when a website references your brand name, product, or domain in text without including a hyperlink to your site. Example: a blog post that says "DeepSEOAnalysis recently published research showing 68% of sites have structured data errors" without linking to deepseoanalaysis.com is an unlinked mention. From a link building perspective, unlinked mentions are high-conversion outreach opportunities: the site has already demonstrated awareness of and willingness to reference your brand — the only remaining step is adding the hyperlink. Outreach to convert unlinked mentions to links typically receives higher response rates than cold link prospecting because the relationship already exists (they mentioned you). Finding unlinked mentions: Google Search (`"DeepSEOAnalysis" -site:deepseoanalysis.com`), Ahrefs\' Content Explorer (search for brand name, filter for pages without a link to your domain), Mention.com or Brand24 (brand monitoring tools that alert to new mentions). Once found, filter out: pages already linking to you (those are linked mentions — not prospects), pages from irrelevant sites, and low-quality sites where a link would provide minimal value.

Why it matters for SEO

Link reclamation from unlinked mentions is one of the highest-ROI link building tactics available: the sites that mention your brand have already qualified themselves as relevant and interested. Outreach to convert these mentions is simpler than cold link prospecting — you\'re asking them to complete the citation they\'ve already started rather than asking them to create new content or evaluate an unfamiliar resource. High-value unlinked mentions from authoritative sites (major industry publications, news sites, respected blogs) that convert to followed backlinks can meaningfully improve a page\'s or domain\'s authority.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

DeepSEOAnalysis does not search for unlinked mentions (which requires web-wide search indexing beyond what a page-level crawl provides). Unlinked mention discovery requires tools that index broad web content: Google Search operators, Ahrefs Content Explorer, Semrush Brand Monitoring, or brand monitoring SaaS tools. The audit does surface internal link gaps — situations where one of your pages mentions a related topic on your own site without linking to the relevant page (an internal linking opportunity that operates on the same logic as unlinked mention reclamation).
