Zero-Click Searches
Search queries where the user finds their answer directly in the SERP — through a Featured Snippet, Knowledge Panel, AI Overview, calculator, or other direct answer feature — and doesn\'t click through to any website.
Definition
Zero-click searches are queries that end at the search results page without the user clicking any result. Google\'s increasing investment in direct-answer SERP features has grown the share of zero-click searches substantially. Key zero-click features: **AI Overviews** — Google\'s AI-generated summaries that answer questions directly above organic results, pulling citations from multiple web pages; **Featured Snippets** — a highlighted paragraph, list, or table at the top of results answering a specific question; **Knowledge Panels** — information boxes for entities (people, companies, places) that include key facts, hours, contact information, and direct answers; **Rich Answers** — calculator-type answers for queries like "what is 15% of 234", "weather in Berlin", "time in Tokyo"; **People Also Ask** boxes that expand inline to answer related questions without requiring a click; **Local Packs** — showing business hours, phone number, and directions for local queries. **Impact on SEO strategy**: zero-click searches reduce the click-through rate from impressions for informational queries even when ranking in position 1. A page that generated 1,000 clicks from position 1 in 2018 might generate 700 clicks from the same position today because Featured Snippets and AI Overviews intercept some of the clicks. However, zero-click is query-type dependent — transactional and navigational queries still result in high click rates; informational queries are most affected. The strategic response: for informational queries where zero-click is high, optimise for the Featured Snippet and AI Overview citation (brand awareness and AI citation value) rather than purely click traffic; for commercial and transactional queries, optimise for clicks from standard organic results.
Why it matters for SEO
Zero-click searches mean that ranking #1 for informational queries delivers less traffic than it used to. Understanding which queries have high zero-click rates (informational, definition-format, calculator, local info) vs low zero-click rates (transactional, navigational, complex research) helps prioritise SEO investment: focus click-traffic effort on commercial-intent queries, and accept that informational content serves brand awareness and AI citation goals rather than direct traffic goals.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit doesn\'t pull Google Search Console impression/click data directly (that requires GSC API access). It does check the structural factors that affect whether a page captures zero-click real estate (rather than losing it to a competitor): FAQPage JSON-LD that makes the page eligible for Featured Snippet and AI Overview citation, concise question-answer sections (40–60 words per answer) that match the format Google selects for Featured Snippets, and content section structure that gives Google clearly delineated answers to pull for direct answers.
