AI Overview
Google's AI-generated answer summary displayed at the top of some search results — citing sources from indexed web pages — which can significantly reduce click-through rates to organic results below it.
Definition
AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience or SGE) are AI-generated answer summaries Google displays above organic search results for a subset of queries — primarily informational queries where Google's language model can synthesise a direct answer from multiple indexed sources. The AI Overview appears as a bordered card at the top of the SERP, often with folded-out source citations. When a user expands the citations, they see links to the web pages the AI drew from. AI Overviews launched broadly to US users in May 2024 and have been rolling out internationally since. Not all queries trigger an AI Overview — they appear most often for how-to, definition, and comparison queries where a synthesised answer adds value over a ranked list of links.
Why it matters for SEO
AI Overviews affect organic CTR in two ways: (1) **Click deflection** — when Google synthesises an answer directly in the SERP, some users get the answer without clicking any result, reducing CTR for queries that previously sent traffic to ranking pages; (2) **Citation opportunity** — pages cited in the AI Overview receive prominent visibility with a link; if your page is a citation source, it can maintain or increase traffic despite lower aggregate CTR. Being cited in AI Overviews requires the same signals that power GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation): clear, structured, authoritative content with explicit question-and-answer structure, FAQPage schema, and E-E-A-T signals. The GEO score checks FAQPage/HowTo schema, question-heading ratio, content chunkability, and AI crawler access — these are the content signals most correlated with being cited in AI Overviews and other AI answer engines.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit evaluates all five AI visibility signals that influence AI Overview citation eligibility: (1) AI crawler access — Googlebot-extended and AIScraper bots must not be blocked; (2) llms.txt — signals site content availability for AI training and indexing; (3) FAQPage/HowTo JSON-LD schema — the primary structured data signal for question-answer content; (4) question-heading ratio ≥20% — content with question-phrased headings is more directly usable by AI summarisation models; (5) content chunkability — average section ≤400 words signals well-structured, digestible content. The combined GEO score reflects overall AI Overview citation readiness.
