SEO Competitor Analysis
The process of identifying which sites rank above yours for target queries, analysing why they rank (content depth, backlink profile, technical health, structured data, E-E-A-T signals), and identifying gaps you can close to improve your own rankings.
Definition
SEO competitor analysis is the practice of systematically studying the sites that rank above you for your target queries to understand what gives them their ranking advantage. The analysis covers: **Content gap analysis** — topics and subtopics competitors cover that you don\'t. Use tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, or manually reading top-ranking pages to identify coverage gaps. **Backlink gap** — referring domains and high-authority links competitors have that you don\'t. Hard to close quickly, but identifies link acquisition targets. **Technical health** — Core Web Vitals, structured data, internal link architecture. Technical advantages are often the fastest to close. **E-E-A-T signals** — author credentials, about page detail, citations of primary sources. **Structured data** — which schema types competitors use that you don\'t (FAQPage, HowTo, Product, Review). **Query share** — which queries each competitor ranks for, and at what positions, vs your own coverage. The output of competitor analysis is a prioritised list of improvements: quick wins (technical gaps, missing structured data, low-effort content expansions) and longer-term investments (link building, content depth). The key mindset: competitors that outrank you have done something Google rewards more — your job is to understand what and replicate or exceed it.
Why it matters for SEO
Competitor analysis converts abstract SEO recommendations into concrete, evidence-backed priorities. Instead of "improve content quality" (unmeasurable), it produces "add these 5 subtopics that the two ranking competitors cover that you don\'t" (measurable and actionable). It\'s the most direct way to understand the ranking gap for specific target queries and what changes would most likely close it.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
The audit identifies on-page gaps relative to what competitive pages would likely have: missing structured data types (FAQPage, HowTo), low question-heading ratio (competitors with these signals have an advantage for snippet selection and AI citation), thin content sections, and missing AI visibility signals. Full keyword-level competitor analysis requires a tool with a keyword ranking database (Ahrefs, Semrush, Mangools).
