The gradual loss of ranking positions that time-sensitive content experiences as it ages and fresher competing content is published — most pronounced for queries where users expect recent information (news, product reviews, how-to guides with version-specific instructions).

Content freshness decay describes the phenomenon where a piece of content that ranked well when published gradually loses ranking positions as time passes and competing content that is newer appears. Not all content decays at the same rate: evergreen topics (foundational tutorials, historical information, conceptual explanations) may maintain rankings for years because freshness is not a primary relevance signal for those queries. Time-sensitive topics (news events, annual product reviews, version-specific software guides, current pricing information) decay rapidly because users and Google\'s systems expect current information.
