Keyword Gap Analysis

A competitive research technique that identifies keywords for which competitors rank but your site does not — surfacing content opportunities where existing competitor rankings prove user demand and ranking feasibility, without requiring original keyword demand validation.

Definition

Keyword gap analysis (also called competitive keyword research or competitive gap analysis) compares your site\'s keyword rankings against those of one or more competitors to identify queries where competitors have organic visibility that you lack. The premise: if a competitor already ranks for a keyword, that keyword has demonstrated search demand and ranking feasibility for a site in your space. Gap keywords are therefore higher-confidence opportunities than keywords with no competitive data. The keyword gap process: (1) Identify 3–5 competitors with similar domain authority and target audience — not just market competitors, but SEO competitors (sites that rank for the same queries, even if they don\'t sell the same product). (2) Pull ranking data for each domain from a keyword research tool (Ahrefs Site Explorer → Organic Keywords, Semrush → Keyword Gap). (3) Filter for keywords where competitor(s) rank in positions 1–20 and your site doesn\'t appear in the top 50. (4) Prioritise gaps by: search volume (how many searches/mo), keyword difficulty (how hard is it to rank?), intent alignment (does the query match content you can create?), and business value (does ranking for this query serve your ICP?). (5) Map each gap keyword to the appropriate content type (blog post, product page, ICP page, comparison page) and add to the editorial calendar. Keyword gaps can be categorised: **Missing content** — you have no page targeting this query. **Underoptimised content** — you have a page that could rank for the query but hasn\'t been targeted. **Cannibalisation** — two of your pages compete for the query instead of one strong page.

Why it matters for SEO

Keyword gap analysis is one of the most efficient ways to build a keyword-targeting roadmap because it focuses on proven demand (competitors already rank there) rather than theoretical demand (keyword tool estimates). It also surfaces competitive weaknesses — if a competitor ranks in position 3 for a high-value query and you\'re not on page 1, a well-executed piece of content targeting that query can displace them over time. For content teams with limited production capacity, keyword gaps provide a prioritised, evidence-backed hit list rather than speculative keyword lists.

How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this

DeepSEOAnalysis does not directly perform cross-domain keyword gap analysis — this requires access to a keyword ranking database (Ahrefs, Semrush, or Moz). The audit does surface on-page signals that indicate keyword targeting gaps: pages with generic title tags that don\'t match specific queries, pages with thin content that can\'t rank for competitive queries, and the presence or absence of keyword-specific metadata patterns. For a full keyword gap analysis, use Ahrefs or Semrush alongside the DeepSEOAnalysis technical audit.
