LINK BUILDING · SEO GLOSSARY
Link Dilution
The reduction in PageRank passed to individual destination pages when a linking page has too many outbound links — each outbound link receives a smaller share of the linking page\'s total PageRank as link count increases.
Definition
Link dilution describes how PageRank is divided among the outbound links on a page. When a page has PageRank of value X and links to N other pages, each link passes approximately X/N PageRank (simplified — the actual formula involves a damping factor). A page that links to 5 other pages passes ~20% of its PageRank to each; a page that links to 100 other pages passes ~1% of its PageRank to each. The more outbound links on a page, the less each individual link is "worth" from a PageRank perspective. Link dilution manifests in several ways: (1) Footer links — site-wide footer links appear on every page, passing diluted PageRank because the footer page typically also has many other outbound links. (2) Resource pages — a curated resource page with 50 links passes much less per link than a focused editorial recommendation with 3 links. (3) Link farms — pages created solely to link to multiple destinations; each link is so diluted as to provide minimal value. (4) Press release syndication — a press release published on 500 syndication sites, each with 50 outbound links, passes heavily diluted PageRank. Understanding link dilution explains why a single contextual editorial link from a focused article is worth more than many sidebar, footer, or resource-list links from the same domain.
Why it matters for SEO
Link dilution affects the quality assessment of inbound links. A link from a page with 3 relevant outbound links is a higher-quality signal than a link from a page with 300 outbound links, even if both pages have similar domain authority. When evaluating backlink quality, consider the number of outbound links on the linking page (visible in Ahrefs or Moz as "external links on page") — a lower number generally means higher PageRank passed per link. Building internal link structures that concentrate PageRank on key pages (by limiting the number of links competing for PageRank from high-authority pages) is also a link dilution consideration.
How DeepSEOAnalysis checks this
DeepSEOAnalysis checks outbound link count on audited pages and flags pages with extremely high outbound link counts (a dilution risk signal for the links those pages pass). The audit also surfaces internal link quality — whether key target pages receive focused internal links from high-authority pages rather than diluted links from pages with many competing outbound destinations.
